Operation Battleaxe began with a frontal attack on the Sollum-Halfaya Pass axis.
Operation Crusader opened on November 18, with the British XIII Corps advancing on Halfaya Pass and the XXX Corps attempting to sweep around Rommel's southern flank to reach the besieged garrison at Tobruk.
Operation Crusader resulted in a clear victory for the British, but one they were unable to exploit due to a lack of reinforcements.

Operation "Battleaxe" was to be a far more serious encounter, and this time was truly aimed at reaching and relieving the Tobruk garrison.
The British had managed to ram the "Tiger Convoy", with 238 new tanks, through the Axis defenses in the Mediterranean, and was now preparing for a decisive battle, that would destroy Rommel's armor once and for all.
Again it would be a two-pronged attack with the fast armored forces on the desert plateau aimed at Sidi Azeiz, and the heavier Matildas supporting infantry assailing Halfaya Pass from both below and above.

 Tobruk '41 Screen Captures!
On the British side, Battleaxe was to be a repeat of the Brevity tactics with an increased force level.
The plan for Operation Brevity was based on a model that would be used time and again, an armored component to defeat the enemy armor, and an infantry component to defeat the frontier strongpoints.
The operation went much according to plan except that the Germans were able to execute a local counterattack that overran the Headquarters of the Kaffrarian Rifles.

Rommel took the withdraw of the 2nd and 6th RTR as a sign that the British left flank was crumbling and on the night of 16th June, he concentrated both the German 15th Panzer and 5th Light Divisions and struck hard at the left flank on the 7th Armoured Division.
Operation Crusader began on 18th November, with 4th Indian Division assaulting the wire north of Sidi Omar, with 7th Armoured Division hooked north west around the enemies southern flank, in three column toward Tobruk.
The third phase of 'Operation Crusader' that lasted from 2nd to 10th December saw the withdrawal of the enemy from the perimeter of Tobruk, which left the Axis garrisons at Bardia and Halfaya isolated.

 88's Shield & Sword
The British attack of June 1941 (Operation Battleaxe) ran into thirteen 88’s which were well dug in and concealed.
General Messervy of the 4th Indian Division said that the 88’s were the main reason for the failure of Operation Battleaxe but his views were obviously not heeded As it all happened again in Operation Crusader.
In Operation Crusader (November 1941) after 5 days of hard fighting the Germans were down to only 100 tanks from the original 174 German and 146 light Italian.
