 USS McCord (DD-534) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She arrived at her assigned operating area east of the Philippines as landings were made at Suluan and Dinagat, 17 October.
During March, McCord continued to operate in the screen of TG 58.4 as it concentrated its efforts against Okinawa and southern Kyushu in preparation for the amphibious assault on the former 1 April.
For the next year she operated along the east coast, cruising as far north as Halifax and as far south as the British West Indies.

When the Gilberts[?] fell to the US, the Japanese Army's 1st Amphibious Brigade[?] came in to defend the atoll, January 4, 1944.
They were unable to finish fortifying the place before the February launch of Operation Catchpole[?] by the US, which captured all the islets in a week.
After the war, the residents were evacuated, often involuntarily, and the atoll was used for atomic bomb testing.

 Mercury
Throughout her World War II service, Mercury operated in the Pacific, beginning with long runs from the west coast to the South Pacific and ending with underway replenishments for the fast carrier forces.
Two weeks later, with Army assault units and combat cargo, she sailed with TG 51.1, the reserve force for operation “Flintlock.” Arriving in Kwajalein lagoon 2 February, she remained anchored there, with her passengers and cargo uncommitted, until 15 February, when the island hopping pace was stepped up.
In 1950 she began operating with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean as the on‑station fleet issue ship with Underway Support Group, alternating tours in that role with Altair (AKS‑32).

The position on Eniwetok gave U.S. forces a base of operations to finally capture the entirety of the Marianas.
Eniwetok was also useful to the United States after the war--in 1952 it became the testing ground for the first hydrogen bomb.

Decision as to the Plan to be executed, and my Operation Plan, will be promulgated at a later date.
Some portions of some of these plans are available elsewhere, such as in the US Army official volumes, but this is a splendid compilation of so many, and such complete, planning documents.
It might have been improved by a bit more commentary from Ross—for example, by how much did given operations diverge from the original planning (the "Victory Plan" would be a classic case), and what lessons did planners learn for future operationss?—but that is apparently beyond Ross' intended scope.

The article concluded with a response to David Wardale's 5AT proposals in which he criticized several aspects of the proposed design - in particular the choice of a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement because of the necessity to use a narrow firebox and because of the poor ride quality that might be expected.
Malcolm Cluett drew attention to the successful operation of modernized R class steam locomotives operating regular trains for West Coast Rail in Australia and suggested that a 5AT locomotive would provide the solution to the problems of running steam on the main line in the future.

The next target on Nimitz's island hopping target was the Marshalls, and he took hardly a break from the previous engagements at the Gilberts before he launched the operation against the Japanese-held Marshall Islands.
Without the ability to send his fleets to the area (his carrier planes were taken away from him for land bases), all he could do was sending out submarines as forward observers, and shifted the men around the Marshalls as he saw fit.
The entire operation was covered in the sky by Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher's planes from six fleet carriers and six light carriers (Mitscher's group also included eight battleships and a full compliment of cruisers and destroyers, a fact not to be ignored).

The Eniwetok assault date was pushed forward and the Kwajalein Reserve Force became the expeditionary force for operation "Catchpole." On the 17th, MERCURY entered the lagoon of strategic Eniwetok, which would become the temporary naval and air base needed to take the Carolines and Marianas.
On 28 February she completed her first such operation and for the next 51 days remained at sea replenishing the fast carriers off Okinawa.

In World War II, Operation Hailstorm was a massive naval air attack launched on 16 & 17 February, 1944 against the Japanese naval facility on Truk in the Caroline Islands.
American dive and torpedo bombers sunk fifteen warships and twenty-five merchantmen.
This attack was conducted in support of the invasion of Eniwetok Atoll (Operation Catchpole) and has often been compared to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

She remained in the Yellow Sea combat zone until mid-March when she received a week's availability at Sasebo On 26 March she Joined TF 77 as it ranged the east coast of Korea providing shore bombardment and fire support services where needed by the U.N. forces.
She rejoined TF 77, 14 May, and remained in the Sea of Japan operations area until 5 June- when her Korean deployment terminated and she got underway for the United States.

Task Group 58.4 (RADM Samuel P. Ginder) with Saratoga CV-3, Princeton CVL-23 and Langley CVL-27, was to cover the landings on Eniwetok for Operation Catchpole and thus did not participate in Hailstone.
The Japanese distribution of aircraft on 17 February 1944 was 68 planes on Moen, 27 on Dublon, 20 operational planes on Eten and 46 more on Param for a total of 161 aircraft up and ready, plus another 180 on Eten waiting for pilots or repairs.
