ArborFood - Corkscrews 101   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Because most wing-type corkscrews never fully extract the cork, because they are rather bulky, because they often have auger mechanisms, and because cheap models are prone to failure due to poorly attached shanks or poorly tempered wires, I do not favor this type of corkscrew.
To use the waiter-type corkscrew, swing out its helixed shank perpendicular to its handle, insert the tip of the helix into the cork slightly off-center (the center of the spiral, not the tip, should enter the center of the cork), and twist the entire helix down into the cork.
The major drawback to the waiter-type corkscrew is that an awkward angle forms when a long cork is extracted, encouraging part of the cork to break off.

 The Corkscrew Test
To prevent this, many corkscrews (Brabantias, Screwpull Table Model, several Monopols, Metal and Plastic WAFs, and Zyliss) have a frame that sits on the neck of the bottle and helps you guide the spiral screw into the center of the cork.
The waiters corkscrews (Laguioles and other waiters) are somewhat forgiving -- after the spiral has been inserted in the cork, you position the boot lever as far away from the spiral as you can.
Waiter's corkscrews such as Laguioles and other waiters are equally good in the hands of an experienced person.

Operation Corkscrew - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During World War II, Operation Corkscrew was the Allied invasion of the Italian island of Pantelleria (between Sicily and Tunisia) on 10 June 1943.
There had been an early plan to occupy the island in late 1940, but this was aborted when the Luftwaffe strengthened the Axis air threat in the region.
The ease of the operation led to an optimistic assessment of the effectiveness of bombing, which was not always borne out in practice.

Pantelleria, 1943   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
In 1943, the World War II Allies launched Corkscrew, a military operation whose aim was to seize the Mediterranean island of Pantelleria.
By the time Corkscrew was finished, it had become a case study in the devastating uses of airpower and a major milestone in the exploits of the famed Tuskegee Airmen.
The operation called for using sustained aerial bombardment to crush enemy power on the island and therefore reduce the number of Allied ground forces needed to capture and hold it.
