Operation Crusader (November 18 - December 30, 1941) was the third, the largest, the longest and ultimately successful attempt to relieve the Siege of Tobruk.
Eighth Army was reinforced to 7 divisons with 700 tanks (including many of the new Crusader Cruiser tanks, after which the operation was named, as well as the American light Stuart and heavy Grant and Lee tanks).
Operation Crusader, while it may have proved a limited success, showed Rommel's Afrika Korps could be beaten and is a fine illustration of the dynamic, back and forth fighting which characterized the North African Campaign.

The first batch of Crusaders did not have stowage bins on the turret rear face and only carried one set of stowage bins on the mudguards, also the auxiliary fuel tank on the hull rear was not carried.
Crusaders as built were painted in plain green G3, the tanks issued to 22nd Armoured Brigade from February 1941 were to this standard with open mantlet and early headlights, some had wheel covers and some did not.
Many Crusader I in the Desert also had the later, bulbous mantlet cover as per kit 6385 and that kit is easier to convert to the later Mk I standard, unless you want to model a very early tank this latest release will have limited appeal.

In this area, the previous major action by the Allies was Operation "Battleax", a poor attempt at the same objectives given to Operation "Crusader".
In Crusader, some of the depots are not even mentioned, most importantly a huge one (a conduit actually, for it seems all axis westedge supply sources comes through it) at or near Bir Hackiem.

Rommel took the withdraw of the 2nd and 6th RTR as a sign that the British left flank was crumbling and on the night of 16th June, he concentrated both the German 15th Panzer and 5th Light Divisions and struck hard at the left flank on the 7th Armoured Division.
At the start of "Crusader" the British tank force outnumbered the German and Italian tanks nine to four and when only considering the gun armed Panzer III and IV's the ratio was four to one.
Operation Crusader began on 18th November, with 4th Indian Division assaulting the wire north of Sidi Omar, with 7th Armoured Division hooked north west around the enemies southern flank, in three column toward Tobruk.

The battle for the Gazala line begins (Operation Venezia), as the Afrika Korps thrusts around the southern end of the Eighth Army's defensive positions towards Tobruk.
This left the remainder of the force, the 22nd Armoured Brigade to be repulsed easily by the untouched German defenses.
