Operation Days of Penitence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Operation Days of Penitence (In Hebrew, מבצע ימי תשובה) was the name used by Israel to describe an Israel Defense Forces operation in the northern Gaza Strip, conducted between September 30, 2004 and October 15, 2004.
The operation, focused on the town of Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahia and Jabalia refugee camp, which were used as launching sites of Qassam rockets on the Israeli town of Sderot and Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip, and in particular in response to the death of two children in Sderot.
The stated goal of the operation, code-named "Days of Penitence" (ימי תשובה) by the Israeli Defence Force, was to prevent Palestinians from launching rockets and mortar shells into Israeli settlements in Gaza and the town of Sderot in Israel.

Yet, in practice, and during the past few days, Israeli prime minister twice refused to approve an army request to end the "Days of Penitence" operation, insisting that the offense should continue until the launching of Qassam rockets is ended.
After 15 days of intensive assaults, army generals concluded that nothing more could be done to achieve "security" goals, admitting that the operation failed to end the firing of Qassam rockets.
Operation "Days of Penitence" has no doubt alienated the internationally backed Egyptian efforts to bring about a coordinated disengagement that could serve as a step towards implementing the road map peace initiative.

POICA-What Does Sharon want of Gaza?
The Israeli Army offensive operation in Gaza triggered allegedly, when Qassam rockets lunched onto Sedarot town inside Israel and ended up killing two Israeli children; is far off from the actual reason that led Israel on September 30, 2004 to execute operation ''Days of Penitence'' in Gaza.
The fact is that the Palestinians and the world anticipated such a massive operation in Gaza as Israeli troops and artillery were on standby for what they believe a reason that constitute legitimate grounds for the Israeli Army to level the northern sector of the Gaza Strip.
The belligerence of the Israeli military operation in Gaza is unprecedented as it aims to eradicate the Palestinian resistance by increasing the assassinations of Palestinian militant and political leaders, arresting activists and supporters in addition to the massive destruction of dwellings and infrastructure.
