As part of Operation Overlord (the return of the Allied armies to NW Europe by way of seaborne and airborne landings at Normandy) the GPR delivered the airlanding elements of 6th Airborne Division to landing zones NE of Caen.
Of the 1,378 GPR men involved in the operation, 229 were killed (or later died of their wounds) and 469 were otherwise wounded or captured (losses to the regiment of some 50%).
As regards planning of the operation, two critical mistakes appear to have been made: (i) the failure to land in the immediate vicinity of the bridges, and (ii) the failure to take into account two German panzer divisions refitting in the immediate area.
