Operation Dominic I and II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Operation Dominic I and II was a series of 105 nuclear test explosions conducted in 1962 and 1963 by the United States.
Those conducted in the Pacific are sometimes called Dominic I. The blasts in Nevada are known as Dominic II.
Operation Dominic occurred during a period of high Cold War tension between the United States and the Soviet Union; the Bay of Pigs Invasion had occurred not long before.

Frigate Bird - on May 6, 1962, a UGM-27 Polaris A-1 missile with a live 600 kt W47 warhead was launched from the USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608), it flew 1900 km, re-entered the atmosphere, and detonated at an altitude of 3.4 km over the South Pacific; part of Operation Dominic I.
Planned as a method to dispel doubts about whether the USA's nuclear missiles would actually function in practice, it had less effect than was hoped, as the stockpile warhead was substantially modified prior to testing, and the missile tested was a relatively low-flying SLBM and not a high-flying ICBM.
Both were part of Operation Hardtack and had a yield of 3.75 Mt On July 9, 1962, Thor missile 195 launched a Mk4 reentry vehicle containing a W49 thermonuclear warhead to an altitude of 248 miles (400 km).

 Introduction
Similarly, the 1962 test operation in the Pacific were called Operation Dominic and the smaller NTS operations were called Operation Sunbeam and Operation Dominic II.
Within each operation, a number of effects programs might be defined, with each programs identifying a technical area of interest, such as blast effects, thermal effects, aircraft structure effects, etc. Within each program, a number of projects would be performed in support of the program.
Each successive test operation was assigned a block of 100 or 200 WT numbers that the projects within the formal test organization used for reporting.

CONTENTIONS The appellant contends, in substance, that the veteran was exposed to ionizing radiation by participation in atmospheric nuclear testing at Operations DOMINIC I and/or DOMINIC II and died from a radiogenic and "radiopresumptive" disease, pancreatic cancer.
If the veteran were to have participated, as claimed, in the atmospheric nuclear tests of Operation DOMINIC I and/or Operation DOMINIC II, service connection for the cause of death as due to/related to such participation would be in order.
While the appellant claims such exposure based on her recall of his statement that he was aboard ship and witnessed an explosion from atmospheric nuclear testing, there is no probative evidence that he was subjected to such exposure or otherwise was a participant in any radiation risk activity.
