A more sensible plan, the two generals explained, would be to build up forces on the flanks of the German salient at Stalingrad and then launch an encirclement operation, with pincers driving south and west to meet at the critical bridgehead at Kalach.
In early January, the Germans in the city observed that the Red Army was building up concentrations of men, armor, and particularly artillery outside the outskirts of the city, in preparation for a final push.
The Germans would no more prove to be a pushover in the air than they were on the ground, but the days when the Luftwaffe regarded fighting the Red Air Force as "infanticide" were over, and as Soviet aircraft improved in quantity and quality the balance would tip steadily against the Germans in the air.

 U Boats
At the outbreak of the war of the war, Germany had 57 U-Boats, most of them not capable of operations in the Atlantic.
It was planned to build about 250 in the Naval construction program called Z-Plan, but since this plan was never realized, Germany entered the war with a much less number of submarines than the allied nations.
Those submarines operated in all oceans of the world - from the North Sea, to the Atlantic, the American Coast (Operation Donnerschlag), the Arctic and even the Indian Ocean and the Pacific - until mid 1943 they were superior to their allied hunters.

During the course of these exercises, it was found that, despite the age of the design and it's relative lack of complexity, the B-1B Lancer outperforms all other aircraft in high-speed, low altitude flight.

Besides the Type VII, the much larger Type IX was the second important submarine class of the Kriegsmarine.
Built for long range operations, those boats operated around the world - the South Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and even the Pacific was their operational area, but they were also used in the North Atlantic, especially during Operation Drumbeat (Donnerschlag) - the U-Boat offensive at the American coast.
Being of a bigger size, these class of submarines were not so maneuverable than the Type VII, making them more vulnerable.

He devised the Rudeltaktik (the wolf-pack strategy) in 1935.17 He felt that convoys with their protective escort must be attacked with "packs" of U-Boats as opposed to individual sorties on search and destroy missions.
Although Donitz wanted to concentrate construction on the Type VII U-boats, with sufficient range to operate in the Atlantic, he found it hard to gain support within the Naval High Command, the majority of whose personnel favoured the massive Plan Z building programme, aimed at developing a powerful surface fleet.
Thus the outbreak of war in September 1939 found Donitz with a total of only 57 U-boats, of which only about 20 were suitable for ocean-going operations, instead of the massive force of 300 which he had been calling for.
