Team 3.3, 1st Joint Assault Signal Company, which I was a member of, was attached to the 3rd Bn., 25th Marine Regt., 4th Marine Division and boarded ship, the USS Biddle, at San Diego, Calif.and sailed on January 13, 1944 for the Marshall Islands.
In some ways, Operation Flintlock would be the most important of the Pacific War to date: it would be the first offensive strike against the enemy to secure a base for future operations.
Operation maps showed numerous installations -- coast defense guns, heavy and medium anti-aircraft guns, machine gun blockhouses, a total of 52 pillboxes, numerous anti-tank trenches, rifle trenches and barbed wire.

Operating out of Nha Be, in the Rung Sat Special Zone, this detachment signaled the beginning of a SEAL presence that would eventually include 8 SEAL platoons in country on a continuing basis.
When attached to the riverine groups the UDTs conducted operations with river patrol boats and, in many cases, patrolled into the hinterland as well as along the riverbanks and beaches in order to destroy obstacles and bunkers.

Throughout her World War II service, Mercury operated in the Pacific, beginning with long runs from the west coast to the South Pacific and ending with underway replenishments for the fast carrier forces.
Two weeks later, with Army assault units and combat cargo, she sailed with TG 51.1, the reserve force for operation “Flintlock.” Arriving in Kwajalein lagoon 2 February, she remained anchored there, with her passengers and cargo uncommitted, until 15 February, when the island hopping pace was stepped up.
In 1950 she began operating with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean as the on‑station fleet issue ship with Underway Support Group, alternating tours in that role with Altair (AKS‑32).

On 8 January 1944, the destroyer escort returned to Pearl Harbor to prepare for her role in Operation "Flintlock," the Marshalls invasion.
