We now come to the testimony of Jim Hailstone, called as a witness by respondents, and we may say that, while Hailstone was a defendant in the action, he did not appear in the lower court, other than as a witness, and is not an appellant.
Hailstone further testified on cross-examination that he, Martin Schroeder, and Hailstone's son had entire charge of the logging operations; that he was hook tender and head loader, Schroeder operated the donkey, and Don Hailstone helped his father.
Hailstone, Don Hailstone, and Martin Schroeder, were agents or employees of either Gattavara or Garner, but were, in fact, independent contractors and acting in such capacity under an agreement with Garner.

Book Review: WWII Wrecks of the Truk Lagoon
Operation Hailstone was a massive military event and this coverage does it justice, explaining every aspect of the raid in a very clear and concise format profiling each ship, plane, strike and target.
Hailstone was the most famous event at Truk, but what is really exciting about the history section is that it includes far more that just this one mission.
Each ship has a full listing of military operations that it participated in, which reads like a history of the war in the Pacific itself, and many other interesting bits, like the camouflage schemes applied, relevant WWII photographs, full page schematics, color photographs from contemporary dives and diving notes for SCUBA divers.

It might have been improved by a bit more commentary from Ross—for example, by how much did given operations diverge from the original planning (the "Victory Plan" would be a classic case), and what lessons did planners learn for future operationss?—but that is apparently beyond Ross' intended scope.

The unit’s reputation as one of the most fearsome in the British Army was also illustrated through evidence outlined for the Saville Tribunal in the continuing opening submission by Inquiry Counsel Christopher Clarke QC.
It had been suggested that as ‘‘one of the roughest and toughest units’’ in the British Army, which was aggressive and took action quickly and decisively against a dangerous enemy, they were ‘‘quite unsuitable’’ for use in an arrest operation during a riot situation.
However those claims were countered by those who felt the use of the Paras was ‘‘unexceptional’’ as someone had to fulfil the role; and, the exercise required qualities like swiftness, which was suited to the Paras.
