The tested HALO proteus aircraft will fly to an altitude of 52,000 feet height, where it will not be disturbed by other commercial planes or bad weather, will circle overhead and provide data delivery faster than a T1 line for businesses.
HALO Network will also have a cost advantage over satellites because the aircraft can be deployed easily -- they don't have to be launched into space.
The HALO Network will initially provide consumers with a broadband digital utility for accessing multimedia services, the Internet, and entertainment services ranging from 1 to 5 Mbps and businesses with 5 to 12 Mbps; higher rates are available.

HALO joins what is getting to be a crowded field of sky-bound communications technologies, all aimed at giving people low-cost, high-speed access to communications.
Systems like HALO and the infamous Sky Station International bid to get around the costs and delays by decreasing the physical distance between network and customer and by designing a network that can be launched on a regional basis.
The 56-foot-long HALO craft was designed by aerospace legend Burt Rutan and with features like the forward wing, it bears an uncanny resemblance to Rutan’s craft Voyager, the first airplane to make a nonstop flight around the world without refueling.

FlightSim.Com Review: HALO - Freefall Warriors
HALO came into its own more recently, with US involvement in the middle and far East, areas of the world characterized by large areas of mountain and desert that are absolutely ideal for this kind of operation.
The first challenge the students have to pass - in fact, one of the major challenges of the course - is to learn to hold the freefall position and how to use their arms and legs to prevent themselves tumbling or spinning, as either fault might lead them to their deaths.
From the HALO course, students pass out to join 45 specialist freefall teams spread around the world, ready to undertake the most dangerous missions - the class that preceded the one shown in the Discovery DVDs found themselves in combat 72 hours after getting their wings.

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis Hands-On Bohemia's ultrarealistic military shooter is being ported to the Xbox.
For those who are unfamiliar with the Operation Flashpoint games, the Cold War Crisis subtitle should be revealing; the game takes place in 1985, just as Gorbachev is about to embark on his policy of perestroika and détente with the United States.
The lack of a lean ability also contributes to this tendency to be killed; since you have no way of knowing what's behind a corner unless you walk around it, you can sometimes be picked off by enemies when you suddenly come into their view, before you can steady yourself for an accurate shot.

What is HALO? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: High Altitude Long Operation
A HALO (High Altitude Long Operation) aircraft is an aircraft designed to act as a very high altitude receiving and transmitting tower, circling a metropolitan area and providing broadband telecommunication service at data rates up to 5 Mbps to homes and up to 25 Mbps to business users with dedicated lines.
Unlike the telecommunication satellite systems now being developed, a HALO system can be launched for one city at a time.
(The HALO aircraft flies at about a tenth of the lowest altitude of the LEO satellite.) An advantage of a high-altitude plane over other wireless solutions is that there is almost no interference.
