When HUSKY #2 was hastily ordered to reinforce allied forces in a precarious situation, poor communication led to friendly naval forces firing on the unarmed and unarmored C-47s flying overhead.

A difficult operation was made far worse when the Allied Naval task group enroute to Sicily mistook Allied aircraft and their towed gliders in the dark for enemy aircraft, and opened fire on the slow-moving air convoys shooting down a number of transports and gliders.
The daylight operations of the Normandy Invasion proved to be exceptionally hazardous since, by then, the Germans were alerted and were ready with massed anti-aircraft fire.
The operation was so huge that it took three days to drop all the paratroops, glider infantry, and supplies needed to sustain the operation.

 OPERATION HUSKY, SICILY 1943
Building on the momentum of the success of Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa, Roosevelt and Churchill wanted a new operation to meet Stalin's demands to divert Germany's attention from the war on the Eastern Front.
Although the American strategists favored an early attack in western Europe, the British pushed for further operations in the Mediterranean and against "the soft underbelly of Europe." Since logistical support for operations in Europe would not be ready until mid-1944, Sicily was chosen as the next Allied target.
Operation Husky, the code name for the invasion of Sicily, was put into motion right after the Casablanca Conference.

 WWII Campaigns: Sicily
Although overshadowed by the Normandy invasion a year later, Operation HUSKY was actually the largest amphibious operation of World War II in terms of the size of the landing zone and the number of divisions put ashore on the first day of the invasion.
Ground commanders complained about the lack of close air support and the inaccuracy of airborne drops, air commanders complained of their aircraft's being fired upon by Allied ground and naval forces, and naval officers chided the land commanders for not fully exploiting the fleet's amphibious capabilities to outflank the enemy once the campaign had begun.
Their conservativeness was somewhat justified, for multinational amphibious operations of this magnitude had never been attempted before, and the initial landings would have been outside of the range of Allied fighter cover.

Notwithstanding the Rapido incident and subsequent operations, a secure Mediterranean, excellent bases from which to wage the air war against the Germans, the engagement of at least twenty-three German divisions, and Italy's change in status to an Allied cobelligerent shortened the war and contributed significantly to the defeat of Germany.
