  The Normandy Campaign: Operation Cobra
Operation Cobra was the code name given to the attack launched as part of the Normandy Invasion, an attempt by the allies to overtake German troops in France.
In order to do so, it was necessary for infantry to break through the German lines between the rivers Vire and Lozon, at opposite sides of the peninsula (Keegan 29).
Operation Cobra had proven to be successful, and had provided the Allies with the means to finally overcome German troops in France.

Although overshadowed by the Normandy invasion a year later, Operation HUSKY was actually the largest amphibious operation of World War II in terms of the size of the landing zone and the number of divisions put ashore on the first day of the invasion.
Their conservativeness was somewhat justified, for multinational amphibious operations of this magnitude had never been attempted before, and the initial landings would have been outside of the range of Allied fighter cover.

However, the defense of the invasion at Salerno was so intense at one point that the general in charge, General Mark Clark, had to arm as infantry two artillery battalions, the regimental band, all the HQ orderlies, and the cooks in order to avoid getting surrounded by the Germans at the Battle of Ponte Bruciato.
Originally, this operation was called ANVIL but the name was changed because it was believed the German’s had discovered the significance of the code word.

The invasion of Sicily, codenamed Operation Husky, the landings at Salerno, codenamed Operation Avalanche and the landings at Anzio, codenamed Operation Shingle.
Neither side has sufficient resources to do the job properly, and improvisation and desperation are the order of the day, and as a result all three battles are tense and exciting affairs.
They were thrown against the enemy as a necessity of war, and the fact that these battles were not on the direct path to victory does not in the slightest diminish their dedication or sacrifice.

In Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily, the Axis player must plan carefully in order to extract the best possible performance from some less than committed Italian troops, while the Allied player must somehow find a way around or through the many natural defensive obstacles in their way.
In Operation Avalanche, the invasion of the Italian mainland, the Germans can exert severe pressure on the Salerno beachhead, but must defend against Allied forces coming to the relief of the amphibious forces.
Operation Shingle, the Anzio landing, was a bold Allied move to break the stalemate caused by the strength of German defensive lines.

However, terrain and weather on almost all of the Italian mainland were perversely unsuited to offensive operations by a modern mechanised army and these factors, together with the fighting abilities of the German army meant that Allied attacks were usually made at great cost for little gain.
