Dieppe Raid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dieppe Raid, also known as The Battle of Dieppe or Operation Jubilee, during World War II, was an Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, France on August 19, 1942.
The previous Chief of Combined Operations, Roger Keyes, who had commanded the famous raid on Zeebrugge in 1918, had been ordered to organize raids on occupied Europe.
Operation JUBILEE still relied on the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division to attack Dieppe, Puys and Pourville, while the paratroop assault on the flank gun batteries was replaced by an amphibious assault by Commandos.

Operation JUBILEE began as Operation RUTTER in April of 1942.
For JUBILEE, however, they were issued with brand new guns, guns which they had only the time it took to voyage to France to work in, and a scarcity of ammunition to work with.
In the ensuing fight the landing craft were scattered, the German units on the eastern beaches alerted, and the fog of war began to descend on the operation.

Operation ‘Rutter’ — The Planned Attack on Dieppe 7 July 1942
Operation Rutter was in fact the forerunner to Operation Jubilee — the Allied attack on Dieppe in August 1942.
The size and scale of the operation made it too large for Army Commandos (the force Combined Operations had at their disposal) to carry out by themselves so regular troops deployed in the UK would be involved, most likely coming from Lieutenant General Bernard Montgomery’s South Eastern Command.
After weeks of training and preparation the troops embarked on their craft but the order to sail was not given as the period of time when the tides were most suitable coincided with a bout of very unsettled weather.

Sixth, combined operations should in future be undertaken from the viewpoint of having a unity of command and having the various political goals and objectives brought together under a coherent plan.
In Jubilee’s case, the goals were neither clear nor concise and the Armed Services were not particularly unified in their commitment or approach to the operation.
The operation suffered from having alterations and adjustments being done at a whole host of different levels, while planning was conducted in a variety of different locations, by different groups, all of which were affected by inter-service rivalry.

The allies chose the port of Dieppe, and the attack-plan was code-named “Operation Rutter.” The attack was very important because it was the first-ever Combined Operation for the allies.
Operation Jubilee had no fighter cover, no overall commander, and no bombers to soften up the area of attack.
Operation Jubilee also convinced the allies that a landing on open beaches had a greater chance for success than a landing in a port, and that such a landing should include the creation of a man-made harbor to support and reinforce the area after the landings.
