OPERATION DOWNFALL, to be complete within one year of the end of the war in Europe, had two major components.
The landings were to be by troops already in the Pacific covered by 34 carriers and by land based aircraft from Okinawa.
Coronet was a larger operation than Olympic, but the landing on Kyushu, the southern island, was expected to be the more expensive because all of the homeland defensives would have been expended there and the promised replacements for Coronet would have been made industrially impossible.

There are probably more military submarines in operation than any other type of submarine, though it is difficult to obtain exact figures because navies are secretive about their submarine fleets.
Their job is one of the most difficult assignments in the navy, for they must work in isolation for long periods, without much contact with their families, since submarines normally maintain radio silence to avoid detection.

The size of Sierra Pacific’s lumber business in relation to the rail line, and the location of its mill on the line evidence that the primary purpose for obtaining the Amador Central was to maintain rail access to the mill, not to profit from railroad activities.
