After the success of their mission, known as Operation Palliser, the Ministry of Defence has set up a system to monitor the health of all British personnel who helped to restore stability to Sierra Leone.
It is a sensible precaution in the light of the large numbers of Servicemen deployed on Operation Palliser, some 4,500 at its peak, and the particular health risks prevalent in Sierra Leone.
One of the lessons which we have learned from previous deployments, including the Gulf War, is ensuring that adequate health monitoring of those deployed so that any longer term problems can be identified and dealt with as soon as possible.

At the time of writing, a week into Operation Palliser, the Paras have not yet had to fire their weapons in anger, but they have already been responsible for the safe evacuation of over three hundred British, Commonwealth and European citizens from the war zone.
It is early days yet, and a week in war is even longer than a week in politics, but it seems that the mere presence of British troops has been enough to make the rebels of the RUF have second thoughts about attacking Freetown, the capital city.
