Operation Rolling Thunder (also known as the "Rolling Thunder Program", in terminology of the McNamara Department of Defense) was the code name for a U.S. military campaign during the Vietnam War, the bombing of North Vietnam by air units of the U.S. Seventh Air Force, Task Force 77, and the South Vietnamese Air Force.
Rolling Thunder was the first of three sustained bombing campaigns against North Vietnam, followed in 1972 by Operation Linebacker and Operation Linebacker II.
Objectives of the operation were to destroy the will of the North Vietnamese to fight, to destroy their industrial base and air defenses (including SAMs), and to stop the flow of men and supplies down the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Operation Rolling Thunder was a frequently interrupted bombing campaign that began on 24 February 1965 and lasted until the end of October 1968.
The operation began primarily as a diplomatic signal to impress Hanoi with America’s determination, essentially a warning that the violence would escalate until Ho Chi Minh "blinked," and secondly it was intended to bolster the sagging morale of the South Vietnamese.
To persuade the North Vietnamese to negotiate, President Johnson restricted the bombing of North Vietnam to the southern part of the country on 31 March 1968, in effect, bringing Operation Rolling Thunder to an end.

Operation Rolling Thunder was the United States code name for the Air strike that was launched on North Vietnam starting in March 1965.
This operation was a tactic that was used in hope of completely destroying the Vietcong motivation to fight on, but it did not effect the war effort as much as the United States had hoped.
This operation carried on to the end of the war until the last couple of months when the last of the troops were coming out of Vietnam in 1973.
