Operation Southern Watch was a operation conducted by Joint Task Force Southwest Asia (JTF-SWA) with the mission of monitoring and controlling airspace south of the 33rd Parallel in Iraq, following the 1991 Gulf War up until the March, 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Operating under the U.S. Central Command, the USS Peterson (DD-969) launched 14 missiles from its position in the Red Sea, while the USS Chancellorsville (CG-62) in the Arabian Gulf launched nine missiles.
Operation Southern Watch was initially an operation in which the Gulf states cooperated.

When Operation Desert Storm ended in 1991, the United States alleged that it wanted to ensure the safety of Kurds who were fleeing from Iraqi persecution from the south.
This operation was launched on August 27th, 1992 with the mission of preventing further inhumane acts against civilian populations.
The operation continued until it transitioned to Operation Southern Focus in June of 2002.

Operation Southern Focus was a period in the months leading up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq (called "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in the United States) in which the military responses to violations of the southern Iraqi no-fly zones were increased, with more intensive bombing of air defense artillery installations and other military complexes.
The operation lasted from June 2002 until the beginning of the invasion in March 2003.
The operation was not publicly declared at the time, and was just said to be an intensification of the already-existing Operation Southern Watch.

Due to the relative calm in the Operation SOUTHERN WATCH area, Joint Task Force - South West Asia (JTF-SWA) began a force drawdown in February 1994, with the redeployment of the 49th Fighter Wing and other USCENTAF assets to CONUS from Khamis Mushiat, Saudi Arabia.
SOUTHERN WATCH operations continued without incident until October, 1994, when Iraq began troop movements south towards Kuwait, prompting U.S. and coalition forces to react with force deployments into theater under Operation VIGILANT WARRIOR.
The requirement for supplemental funds in 1998 was due to the substantial movement of forces to the Persian Gulf region from November 1997-March 1998 in response to Iraq's refusal to comply with United Nations' mandates regarding arms inspections.

Originally designed to protect the rebellious Kurdish minority in the north and the oppressed Shiite minority in the south, these zones are Iraqi airspace in which Iraqi aircraft are not allowed to fly.
Operation Desert Fox was first reported by Iraq to have killed "thousands" of people, but newer numbers indicate casualties in the low hundreds.
