“Operation Starlite” was the first offensive military action conducted by a purely U.S. military unit during the Vietnam War.
The Operation was launched on 17 August 1965, involving 5,500 marines of the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade comprising 2/4 Marines, 3/3 Marines, 1/7 and Marines 3/7 Marines (from the Special Landing Force and originally a reserve component) in an assault on the Viet Cong base near Van Tuong.
The Operation was conducted as an all arms assault involving ground, air and naval units.

Operation Starlite began on the 18th of August 1965 as a combined amphibian-helicopter assault on enemy fortified positions on the Van Tuong Peninsula, with major ground units being the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines, 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, and 3rd Battalion 7th Marines.
Operation Piranha began on the 7th of September 1965, with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines coming ashore by landing craft on the Batangan Peninsula.
Operation Indiana was short when compared to the previous two which preceeded it, but indredibly ferocious, on 28 March, 1966 HN3 Robert R. Ingram a Corpsman serving with "C" Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines was awarded the Medal of Honor for his undaunted bravery during the battle that insued.

Vernon County operated with the Amphibious Forces of the Atlantic Fleet, alternating between Norfolk and Little Creek as her "home ports." During her years of operations from those places, she deployed regularly to the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean areas.
After operating locally out of her home port and in Vietnamese waters, primarily at Chu Lai, Vernon County replenished and underwent a period of upkeep at Subic Bay in the Philippines.

August 18-24 1965 - The 7th Marines conducted an amphibious and helicopter assault and defeated a large Communist force, the 1st VC Regiment, in Operation Starlite, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy in heavy fighting on the Van Toung Peninsula south of Chu Lai.
The new command has under its operational control the 3rd Marine Division, the 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile), and the 101st Airborne Division and is a subordinate headquarters to III MAF.
Significance: While the operation was successful militarily, it led to wide-spread student and anti-war demonstrations and unrest in the United States.

The protocol for the information to and from the Starlite is a simple ASCII-based command set, usually consisting of one-character commands that result in a desired action at the colorhead, or some form of return status code.
