  Guardian | Major Roy Farran
It was the beginning of Operation Wallace, one of the most successful post D-day SAS operations, and it was led by 23-year-old Major Roy Farran, who has died aged 85.
His operation, ending on September 17, resulted in 500 enemy casualties, the destruction of 95 vehicles, a train and 100,000 gallons of petrol.
During the latter phase of operations, Farran raised the "Battaglione Alleato" comprising British, partisans and escaped Russian prisoners, which, in Albania and again against orders, attacked the German 51st Division headquarters.

While Germany suffered several hundred casualties, the overall operation was widely criticised as poorly conceived, although it did lead to the decision not to attempt to capture a port by way of head-on assault during the invasion of Normandy in 1944 -- Operation Overlord.

Operation Trent employed half the Regiment in a successful attack on a $85million opium storage plant in Helmand province, which doubled as an Al-Qaida local command centre.
As a result of the plethora of exaggeration, myth and plain falsehood put out as fact in relation to the British SAS and its methods of operation, anything written about the SAS should perhaps be treated with a very healthy dose of skepticism.
There is even the surprisingly common phenomenon of individuals attempting to bask in the reflected glory of the SAS by claiming to have served with the Regiment, when in reality they have had little or even no connection whatsoever with the SAS.
