Topic: Operation Yonatan

Operation Entebbe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Operation Entebbe took place on the night of July 3 and early morning of July 4, 1976.
It was actually called Operation Thunderbolt by the Israeli military operatives who planned it and carried it out, and it was retroactively renamed Operation Yonatan after the raid commander, Col. Yonatan "Yoni" Netanyahu, the only Israeli soldier to die in the raid.
It is sometimes said that as the commander of the operation, Yoni Netanyahu, ran up the ramp in the plane last in the line, he turned for a moment and was shot in the face.

 Gil Disatnik's Homepage - Israel's wars
Yonatan Netanyahu, the commanding officer of the force, was killed in action, and the operation named after him.
During this operation the air force operated newly purchased weapon-systems and aircraft, such as F-16 fighters, "Cobra" and "defender" attack helicopters, modified "Kfir" fighters of the Israeli aircraft industries, and additional operational systems which are amongst the most modern ones available, manufactured in Israel and installed in "Kfir" and skyhawk fighters.
The brilliant operation was completed with NO losses at all on our side, and its lesson will undoubtedly be studied and thoroughly examined by many armed forces, east and west alike.

The operation was an amazing success with only one IDF solider being killed, and only 2 hostages being lost (all the terrorists were killed).
The one IDF soldier lost was Lt.-Col Netanyahu, as Motti Gur said “He went first, he fell first”; as Yoni led the operation from the front and took a bullet to the heart, and refused medical treatment until the hostages were all safe.
The operation, originally known as “Operation Thunderbolt/Thunderball” was later re-named “Operation Yonatan” in memory of Lt.-Col. Yonatan Netanyahu (z”l)

Israel - Address by PM Ariel Sharon to State Ceremony marking 25 Years since "Operation Yonatan" (The Entebbe Raid)
There are few military operations which, in retrospect, reflect the spirit and courage of an entire nation.
The Israeli Government's decision to launch Operation Yonatan was not only an operational decision but also a strategic one: the risk of surrendering to terrorism is a great strategic risk, much higher than the risks involved in a difficult and complex military operation.
Operation Yonatan is perhaps also a reminder of a time when we were younger and smaller, but had the courage, imagination and determination to spread our wings: to operate in the mountains of Kurdistan, in Yemen, Ethiopia and the Sudan.
