Ophidiophobia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ophidiophobia or Ophiophobia refers to the fear of snakes.
The Freudian school of thought attributes the cause of Ophidiophobia, like most other phobias, to an incident in the person's childhood or the person's societal upbringing.
For instance an ophiophobic who comes in close contact with a venomous snake might even faint or run in fright and when looking at a photo of a snake might in all probability just turn away their faces in disgust.

If this is your problem, you suffer from "ophidiophobia." It is widely regarded by psychologists as one of the most common morbid fears that plague Americans, right up there with fear of heights and fear of closed in places.
If you have ophidiophobia and it interferes with daily living, help is available.
The first step in the desensitization is that you would learn some facts about snakes, such as snake skin is not slimy but cool and dry to the touch; snakes are by nature relatively passive animals; and that they flick their tongues to explore their environment.

A Case Study in Biophobia: Changes in Ophidiophobic Tendencies Throughout Life   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-05)
Degree of fear of snakes (ophidiophobia) was measured in 110 people, ages 1 to 73, in order to determine if there was a correlation between the degree of fear and the stage of life.
Ophidiophobia is characterized by a “feeling of panic, cold sweat, and wave of nausea” at the “mere appearance of a snake”; (Wilson 1984).
In studying ophidiophobia, we see three possibilities concerning the relationship between degree of fear and stage of life, if it is true that fear changes with age.

A few years ago, I cavalierly opened The Big Pop-Up Book of Phobias at a bookstore and when the inevitable snake popped up (as promised in the title) I dropped the book and ran screaming for the door, much to the embarrassment of my companion.
Ophidiophobia started when I was a child but the condition has been aggravated throughout my life by "News of the Weird" type stories in the media.

When I was a kid, the Reader’s Digest came regularly to our house, and I read it cover to cover, including the monthly vocabulary building drills which must have been inspired by the original 1942 30 Days book.
My favorite list was phobias, and one such is included in today’s Pocket Book edition: ceraunophobia, astraphobia, ophidiophobia, nyctophobia, acrophobia, pyrophobia, aquaphobia, ailurophobia, cynophobia, agoraphobia, triskaidekaphobia, and claustrophobia.
I didn’t need to know the name to know I suffered horribly from ophidiophobia (a morbid dread of snakes) and a little from claustrophobia, but when the lists or the Digest articles turned to diseases, I met my Waterloo.

Ophidiophobia, also known as snakephobia, is the most common fear--more than fear of flying, fear of heights, etc. Some medical experts say fear of snakes is an inherited condition, even though other phobias are mostly psychological and specific to the person.
Perhaps it goes back to the original Biblical story of Adam, Eve, the apple, and the snake.
