Ophioglossaceae in Flora of North America @ efloras.org   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Ophioglossaceae comprise two clearly defined subfamilies, Botrychioideae and Ophioglossoideae, which are sometimes recognized as distinct families.
Ophioglossaceae may be only distantly related to the ferns and more closely related to Marattiales and certain seedplants, especially Cycadales, in such characteristics as stelar type, cork cambium, dilated leaf bases, conduplicate vernation, intercalary leaf growth, collateral leaf traces, circular-bordered pits, eusporangia, massive gametophytes, sunken archegonia, and presence in some species of endoscopic embryos.
Blades mostly pinnately divided or lobed; veins free; margins entire to dentate to lacerate; sporangial clusters pinnately branched, sporangia sessile or terminating short stalks.

Ophioglossaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ophioglossaceae is a family of primitive ferns, currently thought to be most closely related to Psilotum, the two together forming the sibling group to the rest of the ferns.
The number of genera included in the family varies between different authors' treatments, and most conservatively the family is treated as containing three genera, Ophioglossum, Botrychium, and Helminthostachys (corresponding to the three families accepted in some other treatments).
Members of Ophioglossaceae are usually terrestrial (excepting a few epiphytic species of Ophioglossum) and occur in both temperate and tropical areas.

 Plant Systematics: Ophioglossaceae
The Ophioglossaceae are a family with a nearly worldwide distribution.
The Ophioglossaceae are one of two extant eusporangiate fern families and apparently have no close affinities to other extant ferns.
Recent molecular evidence (Pryer et al., 2001) demonstrates that Ophioglossaceae and Psilotaceae are sister groups and are themselves siter to all other extant fern families including Equisetaceae.

Also, the interesting character states in Mankyua suggests that we may not understand the plasticity of character states in Ophioglossaceae, and until further research is done on the genus we will still be in the dark about its implications for morphological evolution and systematics.
