Ophioglossophyta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ophioglossophyta are a small group of plants.
Traditionally they are included in the division Pteridophyta, the ferns, originally as a family and later as the order Ophioglossales.
However, it is now recognized that this group is wholly distinct from the ferns and apparently from the other extant groups of plants.

Ophioglossales, Marattiales and Filicales have been treated as a monophyletic group but that has long been regarded as questionable.
Psilotales has been regarded as the basal most group of vascular plants, as a highly modified leptosporangiate fern, or most recently as the sister to the Ophioglossales.
The sister group of the seed plants has also varied from Equisetales, Filicales, Ophioglossales, pteridophytes as a whole, to pteridophytes minus lycopsids.

We will also look at the Ophioglossales, a small homosporous family, and at the heterosporous water ferns traditionally placed in Marsilieles and Salviniales.
The Ophioglossales are a small order of homosporous ferns that include the three genera Ophioglossum, Botrychium, and Helminthostachys.
This group is characterized by homosporous, eusporangiate plants that bear their sporangia in a fertile spike.

Introduction to the Pteridopsida   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The ferns are an ancient lineage of plants, dating back to at least the Devonian.
They include three living groups -- Marattiales, Ophioglossales, and leptosporangiate ferns -- as well as a couple of extinct groups.
An additional group, the Psilotales, is tentatively included in the ferns, though the group is so vastly different from living ferns that no one is really certain of its relationships.

Evolution and Development of Endomycorrhizal Symbioses in Psilotales and Ophioglossales.
My current research on Psilotales and Ophioglossales focuses on studying the evolution of endomycorrhizal associations within the context of a unique type of alternation generations involving a non-photosynthetic gametophyte and a photosynthetic sporophyte.
Characterizing the endomycorrhizal associations in the gametophyte and sporophyte stages in these lineages will provide a framework to further investigate the evolutionary relationships between endomycorrhizal fungi and the transitions in the sporophyte and gametophyte generations throughout land plant evolution.

Members of Ophioglossales and Polypodiales belong to the division Polypodiophyta and are often called "true ferns." The order Ophioglossales in Alabama include the adder's-tongue ferns (Ophioglossum) and grapeferns (Botrychium).
This group has strong leaf dimorphism with large sporangia producing great quantities of spores (eusporangiate) in "fertile spikes" or "segments." The sporangia lack a dehiscence mechanism (annulus) and the spores develop into underground gametophytes.
