Opiate is a collection of heavy, aggressive, cynical music (though the tail end of the title track sounds more like acid rock), packaged in songs noticeably shorter than on their later efforts (Undertow, 1993, and Aenima, 1996).
Opiate remains one of my favorite albums of all time (my 2nd favorite Tool album behind Ænema).
I got this album and immediately liked the heavy bass playing, but the lyrics were controversial along with the art displayed in the album.

opiate might remind you of early bauri ep's with an added distinct organic touch and feel for space and dimension.
what sets opiate apart from everyone else is the composition and development of music themes that captivates the listener at all times, escaping the usual tech-only fascination of the genre.

This album begins with the song "Sweat." This is a very uptempo song that first gives you a taste of what Tool is all about.

This album, the debut for Phoenix based Opiate for the Masses, was a hard one to review.
Despite having 14 songs, the album is done in a mere 44 minutes.
One track, Opiate is playing a straightforward, almost Tool-esque rocker, then there’s something crackhead like System’s recent “Cigaro” tune I’ve heard on the radio, then there’s almost the theme to some modern day hardboiled detective flick (“Intermission”) only to go into a thick-ended industrial banger (“Heaven”).

The best way to examine Tool's new album is to judge it by the standards established by the band's previous work.

 Opiate by Tool Songfacts
This relates to Karl Marx's statement that "Religion is the opiate of the masses." People relied on the church for direction in their lives, and carried on with their lives.
Marx felt that the church kept people from "waking up and smelling the coffee." This is one of the themes of the CD: the band makes fun of the way people let others think for them.
It is my belief, through examining these quotes, that we are somewhat sedated through religion, and anything that we are taught -- anything we are told -- will register as the ultimate truth.
