Opisthocomus differs from both Galliformes and Cuculiformes in: 1) lacking apteria on the sides of the neck, 2) arrangement of the adult downs, 3) number of cervical vertebrae, 4) small thoracic hae- mapophyses, 5) shape of the liver, 6) other specialized characteristics, for example, sternum, stomach, crop.
SUMMARY The systematic relationships of the Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin), long classified with the Galliformes, have been re-evaluated in the light of data from electrophoretic comparisons of the egg-white proteins.

 REX SPECIES
Opisthocomus hoazin -- a member of the Musophagidae, the turaco theropods -- is a long-tailed, head-crested dinosaur with long legs of South America, roosting in communities, and with behavioural systems perhaps providing one with insights into pre-K/T taxa with analogous econiches (dinosaur colonies as information centres).
As is well-known, nestlings have manal unguals allowing it climb in tree branches, and, when predators approach, it will drop into streams, then using manal and pedal unguals to climb back into the trees (often "running" up the trunks, in ways ?similar to those filmed by Ken Dial).

HOACTZIN, or HOATZIN, a bird of tropical South America, thought by Buffon to be that indicated by Hernandez or Fernandez under these names, the Opisthocomus hoazin or O. crislatus of modern ornithologists—a very curious and remarkable form, which has long exercised the ingenuity of classifiers.
Placed by Buffon among his "Hoccos " (Curassows), and then by P. Muller and J. Gmelin in the Linnaean genus Phasianus, some of its many peculiarities were recognized by J. Illiger in 1811 as sufficient to establish it as a distinct genus, Opisthocomus; but various positions were assigned to it by subsequent systematic authors.
L'Herminier was the first to give any account of its anatomy (Comptes rendus, 1837, V. 433), and from his time our knowledge of it has been successively increased by Johannes Muller (Ber.

Hoatzin - Relic of Prehistory - Article by Adrian Warren
It is a bird as strange and bizarre as its name, hoatzin, and has succeeded in foxing zoologists for years as to the origins of its odd characteristics.
Unable to decide whether it is truly primitive or just an evolutionary throwback, scientists have shelved the problem and placed the hoatzin, Opisthocomus hoazin, in a family or even an order all by itself.
Many features distinguish the hoatzin from other birds, not least of which is its voice which sounds more like a heavy smoker's wheezing than a bird call.
