Opotiki is a town in the eastern Bay of Plenty in the North Island of New Zealand.
It houses the headquarters of the Opotiki District Council and comes under the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.
The Opotiki district has large stretches of coastline intersected by rivers of which the two main ones are the Otara River and the Waioeka River.

 Scoop: Study will put Opotiki’s heritage on the map
More of Opotiki’s historical places will be on the national heritage “map” after a comprehensive study of the town centre, which starts this month.
The project is a joint effort by Opotiki District Council, Environment Bay of Plenty and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
Opotiki’s heritage is also a drawcard for visitors, so the project may have tourism spin offs, Mr Forbes says.

On the outskirts of the town is the little St Stephen's Church, built in 1864 on the initiative of Carl Volkner (1819-65), a German Lutheran missionary.
Volkner, who had worked in Opotiki since 1859, was brutally murdered in the church by supporters of the Hauhau movement in 1865 on returning from a visit to Auckland; the Maoris suspected that he was a government spy and had betrayed them.
Because of its nearness to the impenetrable Urewera Ranges, Opotiki was frequently attacked by Hauhau groups or Chief Te Kooti's guerrillas.

In 1891 the first Masonic hall was built on a site next to the Masonic Hotel, but together with all records was destroyed by fire in September 1895.
To establish a new home, the Lodge purchased the Opotiki Town Hall building on the corner of St Johns and Main Street (the street is now named Elliot Street) and met there until 1908.
In 1982, the Lodge moved again into a newly built Masonic Hall across the road from the previous premises in St Johns street.
