Topic: The Opportunists

 [No title]
Opportunists, however, are people who look to take advantage of savers and investors through manipulation of the market.
Be leery of opportunists who try to convince you that you need to move your money into a so-called "Y2K" protected bank account.
Other opportunists, known as lawyers, are also out to make a new living through Y2K and its unforeseen problems.

 Unfocused: Opportunists and Opportunity
Opportunists and Opportunity -- Britt Blaser has gone off on a riff about political opportunism today that's worth a look.
Politicians are naturally opportunistic, but at each point in the trajectory of a nation's evolution, there are levels of opportunism that even they won't sink to.
Just as opportunists in state government couldn't resist the siren call of lottery profits, so too was the big-gummint temptation too great for the opportunistic Ashcroft, Bush and Cheney.

These plants are termed opportunists because they rely on their seeds’ falling into settings where competing plants have been removed by natural processes, such as along an eroding riverbank, on landslips, or where a tree falls and creates a gap in the forest canopy.
It should be noted, however, that the pure opportunist or pure competitor is rare in nature, as most species fall between the extremes of a continuum, exhibiting a blend of some opportunistic and some competitive characteristics.
Dandelions are called opportunists because they contribute to the natural processes of erosion and the creation of gaps in the forest canopy.

Typical of the socialist parties of the epoch of the Second International was one that tolerated in its midst an opportunism built up in decades of the “peaceful” period, an opportunism that kept itself secret, adapting itself to the revolutionary workers, borrowing their Marxist terminology, and evading any clear cleavage of principles.
In Italy, the party was the exception for the period of the Second International; the opportunists, headed by Bissolati, were expelled from the party.
The opportunists (and deserters from the workers’ party such as Mussolini) practised social-chauvinism, lauding (as Plekhanov did) “gallant Belgium”, thereby shielding the policies, not of a gallant, but of a bourgeois Italy, which would plunder the Ukraine and Galicia.

Of immeasurably greater significance, however, is the fact that, in his very controversy with the opportunists, in his formulation of the question and his manner of treating it, we can new see, as we study the history of Kautsky's latest betrayal of Marxism, his systematic deviation towards opportunism precisely on the question of the state.
It is all the more characteristic, therefore, that although Kautsky so explicitly declared that the era of revolution had already begun, in the pamphlet which he himself said was devoted to an analysis of the "political revolution", he again completely avoided the question of the state.
Kautsky abandons Marxism for the opportunist camp, for this destruction of the state machine, which is utterly unacceptable to the opportunists, completely disappears from his argument, and he leaves a loophole for them in that "conquest" may be interpreted as the simple acquisition of a majority.

The Opportunists - Cranky Critic® Movie Reviews
That's the case with The Opportunists, in which both Christopher Walken and Cyndi Lauper deliver low key yet tremendously entertaining performances in the first feature by Myles Conell.
At it's heart, The Opportunists is a purely blue collar American family slice of life drama.
In its way it is not all that different from many of the British slice of life dramas that find their way to the arthouse circuits.

While Lauper is sporting a mane of purple/white/fl hair nowadays (purple is a "healing color," she says), her character in "The Opportunists" is much more subdued, the opposite of her gum-snapping "Mad About You" role.
Lauper says she was attracted to the film, after previous big-screen turns in "Vibes" and "Life With Mikey," because of its realistic portrayal of down-on-the-luck life in Queens.
In the meantime, "The Opportunists" is set to open Aug. 11.

The Opportunists, in short, loads the reasons why Victor needs a victory, while the seriousness and bleakness of the Sunnyside neighborhood seems to demand a noble failure instead.
Though, to those who remember the cinematic era The Opportunists is based upon, it seems that that decade's pessimism can never be recalled, especially in money-drunk, optimistic times.

It's strange to encounter a movie like The Opportunists, the debut feature by writer/director Myles Connell, because, as it eschews pomp and sensationalism, there aren't a lot of obvious highlights to mention.
The stakes are low, the relationships are subtle, and Christopher Walken hardly even raises his voice, barking only a single syllable in a fleeting moment of anguish.
Until then, The Opportunists is simply a whiff of great unwashedness yet to come.

The Opportunists by Myles Connell is a pleasant surprise.
To some extent, it represents a throwback to the good old days in Hollywood when even the most hard-boiled gangster movies, or movies later taken to have glorified the criminal life, could be relied upon to portray a moral world characterized by inflexible certainty about what constituted right and wrong.
I don't say that more could not have been done with it, and with the enigmatic character of the person who performs it, but we should be grateful to have been given as much as we have.

This is not a polemic against Bernstein, but, in essence, a concession to him, a surrender to opportunism; for at present the opportunists ask nothing better than to "quite safely leave to the future" all fundamental questions of the tasks of the proletarian revolution.
Throughout the pamphlet the author speaks of the winning of state power--and no more; that is, he has chosen a formula which makes a concession to the opportunists, inasmuch as it admits the possibility of seizing power without destroying the state machine.
Afterwards opportunists frequently referred to this point to justify their collaboration with the bourgeoisie.
