Opposite lock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Opposite lock is a colloquial term used to mean the deliberate use of oversteer to turn a vehicle rapidly without losing momentum.
The term "opposite lock" refers to the position of the steering wheel during the maneuver, which is turned in the opposite direction to that of the bend.
Left-foot braking is the favoured technique for using opposite lock in a front drive vehicle.

Although any number of locking bolts or latches may be employed in the present invention, in the illustrated embodiment mortise lock 10 includes a latch bolt 20 having an auxiliary latch 22, a rectangular bolt 24, and a dead bolt latch 26 which are configured to protrude from a faceplate 28.
Locking bolts 20,24,30,32 and 34 can engage a variety of locking hardware installed in a door and which are used to lock the door, such hardware being very well known in the art, so no further description is necessary for the skilled artisan.
Thus, locking bolts 24,30,32 and 34 are all actuable by the key-operated lock cylinder 14.

Accordingly, when the lock bar is in a locked position, both end portions 16 and 18 remain captured within the housing so that the U-shape lock bar encloses an area 15 between the lock bar 14 and the housing 12 in the same general manner as conventional locks which use a U-shaped lock bar.
Thus, release of the lever 60 from the locked position, upon clockwise rotation of the cam 58, allows the lock bar to be pulled outwardly from the housing until the second end 18 of the lock bar clears the housing, thereby opening the lock 10.
A tapered distal end 106 of the lock bar engages the convex surface 84 of the claw 80 of the locking lever, causing the claw 80 to be urged inwardly within the lever 60, against the force of the spring.

Lock (Java 2 Platform SE 5.0)
Commonly, a lock provides exclusive access to a shared resource: only one thread at a time can acquire the lock and all access to the shared resource requires that the lock be acquired first.
When locking and unlocking occur in different scopes, care must be taken to ensure that all code that is executed while the lock is held is protected by try-finally or try-catch to ensure that the lock is released when necessary.
If the lock is not available then the current thread becomes disabled for thread scheduling purposes and lies dormant until the lock has been acquired.

Left-foot braking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is closely related to the handbrake turn, but involves locking the rear wheels using the foot brake, which is set up to apply a significant pressure bias to the rear brakes.
The vehicle is balanced using engine power by use of the accelerator pedal, operated by the right foot.
Rear wheel drive rally vehicles do not use this technique because they can be much more easily turned rapidly by using excess power to the wheels and the use of opposite lock steering.

 TrueTrac at Opposite Lock
For serious 4x4 fans with constant four-wheel-drives that used to mean fitting a 'locking' differential on the front axle, but not everyone was willing to put up with the sacrifices fitting a locking diff entailed.
With all that in mind, Opposite Lock set about finding the perfect solution (total traction without any worries about loss of steering ability or durability) for owners of vehicles with constant four-wheel-drive such as Toyota's 80 and 100 Series LandCruisers.
That's important when you're off-roading because with some solid locking front diffs you can lose feel to the extent that it's difficult to tell which way your wheels are pointed.
