Tempo (chess) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In chess, tempo refers to the time taken by a move.
A simple example of losing a tempo may be moving a rook from a1 to a5 (see algebraic chess notation) and from there to a8; simply moving from a1 to a8 would have achieved the same result with a tempo to spare.
When the two kings stand in opposition, for example, the player to move is often at a disadvantage (zugzwang) and so must triangulate in order to return to the same position but with the opponent to move.

The most immediately obvious of these is the chess position known as "trebuchet", which gave its title to the Readymade of 1917: a coat rack with four hooks, which is nailed to the floor, hooks uppermost.
Thus the general formula for heterodox opposition in the principal domains is as follows: without the move, the White King has the heterodox opposition when he occupies, on a right hand adjacent file to the file occupied by the Black King, a square of opposite colour to that occupied by the latter.

Mark Lowery's Exciting World of Chess - Endgames : Introduction
King Opposition (or simply "the opposition") is the concept used to determine whether a player or the opposing player may gain an advantage (positional superiority and/or temporal advantage) toward checkmating, to force pawn promotion, or some other goal.
For distant opposition, determination of which player has the opposition depends whether the number of squares between the Kings are an even number of squares, or an odd number of squares.
King opposition situations may either be latent (able to be forced on the opposing player) or be the present situation on the board.

Telegraph | News | Chess king Kasparov goads Putin with 'alternative summit'
Since he swapped chess for opposition politics a year ago, Mr Kasparov has been transformed from one of Russia's all-time heroes to one of the Kremlin's most hated men.
The Kremlin is worried that the chess master's conference will upset the carefully co-ordinated public relations drive before the summit, the first time it has been held in Russia.
Mr Kasparov, 43, said he hoped the two-day meeting would act as "a mirror on the reality of Russia" for the G8, demonstrating that Mr Putin was an autocrat intent on erasing the freedoms won since the collapse of communism.

 MATHEMATICS 177 ENDGAMES WITHOUT PIECES
The opposition, or distant/potential opposition, are strategic prizes which you may keep as long as you like, but can give up at any moment, usually in exchange for the queening of one of your pawns.
The opposition is a particularly mysterious asset: endgames are often won or lost because of it, sometimes with the players unaware of it's role in their game.
The opposition is valuable because with it's help, you may force your opponent's king away from a pawn it is guarding, allowing you to capture it.

Technically, it means a “situation in a chess game in which a player is forced to make an undesirable or disadvantageous move.” Literally, it is a situation where a chess player would ultimately like to “pass on his/her turn” (i.e., let his/her opponent move twice).
Opposition is one of those sophisticated words chess enthusiasts use to describe a relatively simple phenomenon (not too different from “fiachetto” or “zugszwang”).
Opposition is important in chess because often endgame victory depends not on the king reaching a single key square but a series of them.

The rule of the opposition is: whoever is to move when there is an odd number of squares between the Kings does not have the opposition.
Another way to look at the opposition is if it’s your turn to move and your King is separated from your opponents by an even number of squares, then you do not have the opposition.

The two artists, both serious chess players, invited a "who's who" of their avant-garde contemporaries to redesign the standard chess set or create works that otherwise explored the imagery and symbolism of chess.
While some chose to create chess sets that explored formal problems of design and functionality, others created works that alluded, often in strikingly contemporary and personal ways, to the historical associations of chess as a game of war or as a metaphor for amorous conquest.
