By focusing in real and momentum space considerably higher luminosity and resolution are obtained than in conventional diffractometers using plane crystals and Soller collimators.
Further improvements in the resolution and luminosity are possible by using thinner bent crystals (better resolution), sandwich-type monochromator (higher luminosity), and/or doubly-bent designs for simultaneous vertical and horizontal focusing [3].

German researchers improve the axial resolution of a confocal microscope by 34%.
Stefan Hell and Carlo Mar Blanca from Germany's Max Planck Institute of Biophysical Chemistry have improved the axial resolution of a confocal two-photon microscope to 330nm.
This beats the previous resolution limit of 500 nm by 34%.

The use of the ST-4 and the first crack in the resolution wall had hinted at GUIDING as being a larger factor than Wallis and Provin had previously thought it was.
With a resolution limit of 24.3/A, a C-8 and an ST-7 (9 um pixels) were a good match but as the 'limit' passes 10./A then a C-11 and an ST-7 become a good match and it will require a film like 2415 to take advantage of this fast guider system on smaller scopes.

The PSD should only be used with the Crossed Slits, as the Monocapillary Optics has too low intensity, the Hybrid Mirror only goes with the Triple Axis/Rocking Curve, and the X-ray Mirror is often too high in intensity.
When using the Crossed Slits as the primary optics, it is a good idea to make a test scan using the Parallel Plate Collimator.

We know from Don Miller's dissertation research at the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester prior to coming to Indiana University that if the optical system of the eye is well corrected, it becomes possible to view the smallest neurons of the retina, the photoreceptors.
This slide shows the most recent photograph of the array of cones in a living eye taken by the research team of David Williams, who was Don's mentor at U. Rochester.
