Red dot sight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The red dot sight or reflex sight is an optical firearm sight (also used as an aiming sight for telescopes) that uses a refractive or reflective lens to generate a collimated image of a luminous or reflective reticle.
Newer red dot sights may use a chevron or triangular light instead of a dot for precision in aiming and range estimation.
Since dot sights can be mounted at any distance from the shooter's eye with no issues of focus, military rifle mounts usually place the sight over the forend, about 12 inches (30 cm) from the shooter's eyes.

These optical elements are incorporated in their respective optical channels 51-54, respectively, to form a compact, lightweight, auxiliary optical unit which may be conveniently carried and held in the palm or pocket of the user for quick attachment to the normal telescopic gun sight when required, and for quick detachment therefrom when no longer required.
The auxiliary optical device of Claim 1, in combination with a telescopic gun sight optical device to which the auxiliary optical unit is attached in a quickly-attachable/detachable manner.
When the auxiliary optical unit is no longer needed, it may be quickly detached to enable the telescopic gun sight again to be used without the drawbacks of increased size and weight and decreased field of view.

Iron sights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For precision applications such as hunting or sniping the iron sights are usually replaced by a telescopic sight, and for target shooting and combat operations low-power magnified or unmagnified optical sights such as red-dot or reflex sights are increasingly common.
The rear sight may be adjustable for windage and/or elevation.
With regard to firearms, the term iron sights refers to the open unmagnified sighting system which comes as standard with most weapons.

Patent 5657571: Vertical position indicator for optical sights
3,161,716) a principal optical sighting datum, or reticle, comprising a post, dot or crosshair is used to align the bore of the firearm along the longitudinal axis of pitch and the longitudinal axis of yaw with a target for purposes of enabling accurate aimed fire.
Optical sights are typically mounted substantially above the plane of the bore of a firearm.
Such optical sights typically incorporate no means for indicating a longitudinal axial rotation of the firearm.

 Patent 4364628: Optical sights
Whilst the invention is applicable generally to optical sights which are required to be stabilised, such as may be used for cameras in some cases, the principal concern of the present invention is optical gun sights for use with the gun control system of fighting tanks.
Preferably said optical sight is a stabilisable optical sight and means are provided for applying servo control signals to driving means for said optical wedges whereby in operation said sight tends to be stabilised against movements of a body on which said sight is carried.
The optical axis of the assembly is represented at 10.

 DEAD-EYE: Combat Optics
Optical sights first saw combat use during the Civil War, where sharpshooters armed with heavy rifled muskets and magnifying scopes were able to take aimed shots at very long ranges.
Optical sights are very similar to adjustable iron sights, providing an accurate point of aim (zero) at a specific range.
Optical sights are described in terms of magnification -- so a 3X optical scope makes the target 3 times larger for a given range than non-magnified iron sights.

Optical sights are no different; after all, we probably already carry plenty of spares for our flashlights, which, seem to swallow them as if they were free candy.
Electronic optical sights can be more forgiving of operator error than traditional iron sights, and they can increase combat effectiveness when employed within their limits.
Though they rely on electric components and battery power, electronic optical sights can enhance performance and provide a greater certainty of success.

AR 15 Parts and AR 15 Sights
A key benefit for an optical sight on the survival rifle is in target identification.
When optical sights, lasers, and other aiming gizmos fail, the iron sights are always there to fall back on.
In addition, the A2 sights are calibrated for adjusting range; zero your rifle for 300 meters and you can dial in the range up to 800 meters.

 91/30 Sniper Page
Many Russian rifles and their optical sight components have been re-built during their many years of service, and this is generally indicated by a box with one or two diagonal crosses on the timber — which is generally roughly finished with hand-brushed shellac - and many of the metal components.
Telescopic sights allow for the adjustment of the focal length and magnification of the sight while the optical sights are fixed in focus and magnification.
I would submit that it wasn't until the use of optical sights and the improvements called for in the 19/30 program were converged that the Soviets began a real sniper program.

 Handgun Sights
An optical sight is faster to aim at typical hunting ranges and much easier to shoot accurately than iron sights, because it puts the aiming mark and the target in the same optical plane.
Red dot sights and extended eye relief telescopic sights are the two kinds of optical sights usually available for handguns.
Optical sights are a boon for middle-aged eyes.

 Optical sights
Optical sights for pistols require very long eye relief, because the handgun is typically held at arm's length.
In a discussion of optical sights the word usually refers to the apparent movement of the target relative to the reticle (or red dot) when you move your head as you look through the scope.
Some red dot sights have dispensed with the tube altogether, and consist of a base with the optical and electronic systems necessary to project the red dot in a sort of "heads up" display.

Shooting Times: Turn on to Electronic Sights
It was billed as a "battery-powered, parallax-free non-magnifying electronic optical sight" and had originally been designed for close-range rifle hunting in the darkly forested moose country of Scandinavia.
Tasco's Optima 2000 sight comes with standard base mount, snap-on cover, adjustment tools, and battery; is fully adjustable for windage and elevation and utilizes a small hex wrench with an index Microdial for precise measurements; and its clean, clear dot definition allows a precision sight picture and encourages excellent groups.
Electric "dot sights" were in--from bullseye to speed shooting, from long range to close range, from the Bianchi Cup to the Steel Challenge to Camp Perry to the USPSA Nationals to the IPSC World Championship.

UKAN Forums - Optical Pistol Sights
Most of the mid-priced electronic red-dot sights are all clones of each other, for example, the OK(O) "Reflex" knock-offs that I cited in the referenced thread -- the Maruzen/Walther/GandP/GandG "reflex" sights are all brand-marketed items manufactured by Umarex, and are very similar in terms of performance and overall construct.
Pistol-scopes are more or less simply traditional optical scopes with low magnification values which are paired with an extended eye-relief design (so you can hold the pistol at arm's length and properly aim).....
To mount any sight to your replica, the revolver will need to be fitted with a proper mount base.

 The Outhouse
Metallic sights are comparatively simple mechanical guides affixed to the barrel that are designed to facilitate the proper aiming of a rifle; such sights provide no magnification and thus impose a greater test of shooting skill than do optical sights.
The chief component of an optical sight is a small telescope mounted on the barrel, which provides a magnified view of the target.
The small-bore and high-power events are subdivided into contests for firearms with optical sights and those with metallic sights.

Re: optical sights for AK-rifles (ask Tantal or Martin)
There are many new types of Russian sights that we have not seen much of in the West, in many cases they have not been widely adopted because there is not enough finance for them.
Since all AK-74M's are equipped with the universal optics mounting plate, identical to the Saiga rifle and AK-100, it can be equipped with any of the standard Russian day and night vision mounts.
