  Optics - MSN Encarta
Optics, branch of physical science dealing with the propagation and behavior of light.
In a general sense, light is that part of the electromagnetic spectrum that extends from X rays to microwaves and includes the radiant energy that produces the sensation of vision (see Electromagnetic Radiation; Energy; Spectrum; X Ray).
In geometrical optics the wave theory of light is ignored and rays are traced through an optical system by applying the laws of reflection and refraction.

Optics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Optics (appearance or look in ancient Greek) is a branch of physics that describes the behavior and properties of light and the interaction of light with matter.
The field of optics usually describes the behavior of visible, infrared, and ultraviolet light; however because light is an electromagnetic wave, analogous phenomena occur in X-rays, microwaves, radio waves, and other forms of electromagnetic radiation.
The "ray" in geometric optics is an abstract object which is perpendicular to the wavefronts of the actual optical waves.

Optics is concerned with all aspects of the behavior of light and thus covers a lot of territory.
Optics can help us with these other wavelength regions, but most of our discussion here will focus on the important and familiar visible spectrum (i.e., the colors of the rainbow, from violet light with wavelengths near 400 nm [nanometer, one-billionth of a meter] to red light near 700 nm).
The optics pages discuss a lot of basic optical concepts with a useful approach that is geared toward the importance of these concepts to the actual use of the optics.

The treatment of geometric optics is suitable because the subject is all but obsolete in our age of lens design software and an engineer really needs only moderate knowledge of the third order theory equations and more of an understanding of what aberrations are and why apertures help etc.
For starters, the necessary information for a full treatment of Fourier optics is spread out over three chapters (7,11 and 14 if memory serves me) and the meaning of the transform and all of the little tricks that can be done with it is all but completely lost.
Fourier optics is a losely defined subject as it is and with Hecht's treatment, it comes off as a bunch of unrelated phenomena.

You need to have four or more years of college to be an engineer or scientist (most scientists and many engineers go to graduate school after college to increase their knowledge and get advanced degrees).
Optics (optical science) and optical engineering are specialized but very useful and interesting fields, though there are many, many other areas too.

HubbleSite - The Telescope - Nuts & Bolts - Optics
If Hubble's primary mirror were scaled up to the diameter of the Earth, the biggest bump would be only six inches tall.
Shortly after Hubble's deployment in 1990, scientists found that the curve to which the primary mirror was ground was incorrect, causing "spherical aberration." Fortunately, corrective optics were able to solve this problem.
Hubble's mirrors are made of ultra-low expansion glass and kept at a nearly constant room temperature (about 70 degrees Fahrenheit) to avoid warping.

The confusion over the operation of the eye was finally resolved through experiments performed by the Egyptian scientist Ibn Al Haythen, known in Europe as "Alhazen", in the Middle Ages.
However, the modern understanding of optics did not begin until the 17th century, as researchers began to determine the precise rules of reflection and refraction, leading to the introduction of optical equipment, such as telescopes, microscopes, and eye-glasses.
