The optocoupler has two sides - one hooked up to the internal LED (also known as the "control voltage" side), and the other side functions as the switch.
When the optocoupler circuit is active and open (control LED is lit), I measured no DC resistance at all through the optocoupler - the signal seems to pass unhindered to the circuit input.
When the optocoupler is closed (control LED not lit), I measured infinite resistance from the input jack through to the actual circuit input.

 Optocoupler Extends High-Side Current Sensor to 1kV - Maxim/Dallas
The circuit relies on the optocoupler's isolation barrier to separate the high-side and grounded side of the 1,000V system.
The grounded section monitors the optocoupler's low-voltage side, and outputs a voltage proportional to the high-side load current.
The chosen optocoupler has a feedback photodiode on the high-voltage side that virtually eliminates the LED's nonlinearity and drift characteristics.

 shunt regulator closing loop
A higher current in the optocoupler output transistor results in an increase in the controller's FB pin voltage, thereby reducing the peak primary current and effectively lowering the output voltage.
The optocoupler's output current is related to its current transfer ratio and the current generated by the TL431.
The optocoupler voltage gain is set by its CTR, and the equivalent internal capacitance and external components connected to it.

A major concern of circuit designers is the reliability of an optocoupler when subjected to repeated and long-term, high-voltage stress between its input and output.
Most of the technical data on optocouplers adequately address the capability of an optocoupler to withstand one-time high-voltage transients, but they do not adequately address the issues of: a) how long one can apply a steady state ac or dc voltage between the input and output of the optocoupler before degrading the semiconductors
Electromechanical relays can be used as actuators, as switches to route power to electrical devices, or for signal routing within a device or between different instruments.
