Despite this, Oracle's patent policy statement is still very well written, and worth reading.
I could be wrong, but I seem to remember hearing one of the founders of Oracle was responsible for getting the company to issue this statement, but after he died the lawyers moved to have the policy reversed.
I have also heard the argument that companies are loath to make such statements, since doing so has the potential to be used against them in court, making it harder to defend or assert their patents.
