May 5th, 2006, 05:50 AM I think the ideal option would be for Oralux to become Ubuntu-based (as Mephis did).
That way Oralux could be a cutting edge testing ground for new assistive technologies and the more mature ones could make it into Ubuntu main.
The best option for that currently is the Oralux distro (http://oralux.org/), which is a Live CD that boots up directly into a speaking environment.

Oralux is in fact a knoppix version but it need its own menu link here on this site.
Oralux is a strong distro because it got drivers for braille display and at the sametime it got the Screen Reader option.
Get the cd in your cd disk drive, boot up your computer, wait a few seconds, then select your speech synthesis or braille display version, thats that and thats it.

C’est une distribution française qui inclut plusieurs langues (tiens, le portugais brésilien) — on vous attend pour compléter les traductions (il est possible de le faire pendant que BitTorrent télécharge Oralux, pratique, non ?).
Oralux a misé beaucoup sur les synthétisuers vocaux parce que nombre d’aveugles tardifs (pas de naissance) ont du mal avec le braille et parce qu’une tablette braille coûte très cher.

After I finished the install, I edited the grub config file to give me a serial console but I made a mistake and the thing wouldn't boot.
So I put in a knoppix based live linux CD called Oralux.
I was able to mount the hard drive, edit the grub config file and reboot.

For any further boot, your PC will boot on the floppy which will start the CD with the correct cheatcodes.

I tried oralux 0.6a and was sort of dissapointed.
Emacspeak would be nice it you took away emacs and replaced it kwrite :) Then again oralux sounded better then my attempts at getting festival to spit out ogg's via the console.
If I go totally blind one day I have faith that I will be able to pop in my live distro dvd with the entire project gutenberg collection and listen my ears out :) I think it will be cool when people who are totally blind now can do the same too!
