The Orange Line of the Washington Metro consists of 26 subway stations from Vienna/Fairfax-GMU to New Carrollton.
Service on the Orange Line began on November 20, 1978 between National Airport and New Carrollton, with five new stations being added to the existing network from Stadium-Armory.
The line was completed on June 7, 1986 when it was extended by four stations to Vienna/Fairfax-GMU.

There were plans to extend the line from the northern, and southern elevated, but those was scrapped, in favor of a decision to tear down the remaining elevated lines.

The MBTA's 01200-series Hawker-Siddeley Orange Line rapid transit cars have been serving the system faithfully ever since their purchase in the late-1970s.
The Orange Line itself is at present probably the most "modern" of the MBTA's subway lines.

 Pacific Electric Santa Ana Orange Line
This company in turn sold the line to The International Railway Company which operated it regularly as a motor road; on December 5, 1901 the line was sold to Old PE, which in turn deeded the line to LAIU on July 1, 1904.
In 1914 New PE abandoned the motor line remnant and converted it into a single track electric railway from the bridge to the Plaza in Orange; this segment opened as an electric railway on June 8, 1914.
In early years some freight service operated over this line, but with the freight-only extension from Orange to Marlboro (where connection was effected with SP) and the 1930 abandonment and removal of the Orange-Santa Ana Line, all freight moved north from Orange rather than south.

The Orange Line was one of the recommended routes according to the Mass Rapid Transit Systems Master Plan which ran from Bang Kapi (Northeastern side) to Bang Bumru (Western side).
After forming the Purple Line, a new line that mixed from vary sections of some other projects, the line remained only the Bang Kapi – Sam Sen Section, however it was extend westward to end at Bang Bumru.
The new Orange Line is aimed to serve travel demand in the west (in Thanburi side) and east of Bangkok.
