Orange Line patrols increased - The Boston Globe
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said it also plans to hire 34 transit police officers in the coming months, a move that general manager Daniel A. Grabauskas said had been in the planning for months and was not in direct response to recent acts of violence on the Orange Line.
Orange Line patrols were stepped up after two stabbings in the last three weeks.
While acknowledging that it is not a direct responsibility of the MBTA to combat violence away from its mass transit lines, Matseuda said a better solution to violence on the Orange Line is increased antiviolence education for teenagers.

Orange Line (MBTA) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Orange Line is one of the four subway lines of the MBTA.
Originally known as the Main Line of the Boston Elevated Railway and later the Forest Hills-Everett Elevated Line, the current name is derived from Orange Street, an old name for the section of Washington Street immediately south of downtown under which the Washington Street Tunnel, forming the center of the line, still runs.
During the conceptual stages of the modern Orange Line in the 1970s, extensions to the beltway Route 128 were proposed by the Boston Transportation Planning Review, with termini at Reading in the north and Dedham in the south.

The second in a series of studies on Back Bay, this article summarizes groundwater levels in Back Bay since the area was filled more than 100 years ago, and traces the effects of construction of sewers and drains, subways and other transportation corridors, and buildings on the groundwater table.
Although most of the precipitation in Back Bay becomes runoff and is carried away by storm drains and sewers, the seasonal variations in the type, and level, of precipitation cause an annual fluctuation in groundwater levels up to about 2 ft. in some areas.
Dewatering for the construction of sewers and drains, subways and other transportation corridors, and many buildings has temporarily lowered the groundwater table in the fill and, in particular, the piezometric head in the sand outwash over a large area of Back Bay, in some cases for a period of several years.

Silver Line opponents see chance to kill plan - The Boston Globe
Groups that have fought the MBTA's Silver Line for years see a fresh opportunity to spike the line's completion now that the transportation authority's new chief has removed it from the federal funding pipeline, citing lack of community support and disruptions that could occur during and after construction.
That action means the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will not seek a rating next year for the project, designed to connect the existing ''rapid bus" segments.
A project favored by many Silver Line opponents would be to run a light-rail line along Washington Street into an abandoned subway under Tremont Street and connect with the Green Line at Boylston Station.
