The new recruits reached the nation's capitol early on the morning of November 29 and marched to the Soldiers' Retreat, a large 2-story barracks, already crowded with new recruits.
The men of the 9th New York "lay down on the floor for an hours' rest before daylight." That afternoon, after a scanty breakfast, the men marched up Seventh Street to high ground on Meridian Hill north of and overlooking the city, and pitched tents in a pine grove at Camp Fenton.
The 4th New York Cavalry was transferred to the regiment as companies B, E, and I, and the organization composed of veterans and recruits was retained in service until July 17, 1865, when it was mustered out of the service.
