In 1370 the castle became the centre of the Orava County.

I'm researching the area in Orava County, (northwestern) Slovakia where my grandparents and great grandparents came from.
My grandmother, Marie GONDERA Panek was born 1879 in Oszada (Osada) which was a small village on the Black Orava River a few miles north of Trstena.
I've located both towns on old maps, however the town of Oszada was evidently flooded over by the creation of Lake Orava ("Oravska Priehrada") sometime around 1950.

 Dolny Kubin: Caplovic, Vavrinec
During the years 1798 and 1810, he acted as a clerk for the Orava County and from April 1810 until the year 1852 he worked in the services of the Zichy family in Bratislava, as their secretary and keeper of their archives.
Caplovic's library became famous throughout the whole of the Hungarian Empire and in 1839, he gave his rich library as a present to his natives in Orava, in order to raise their education.
In his honor the Society of Caplovic's Library was founded, and in 1907 they specially built a house in Dolny Kubin to store this library in, which is still here today.

Artists from Lewes and Newhaven have in turn been invited to Veszprém and Balatonfüred in Hungary, and during the 1997 Lewes Festival there was an exhibition of folk woodcarving from the mountainous county of Orava in northern Slovakia, together with works by Lewes artists who had visited central Europe.
A close relationship has been developed between the county of Veszprém and East Sussex, especially with the signing of an Accord between the two counties in 1996.
A group of young people from Lewes and Brighton, who joined an international youth camp at lake Balaton, were shown round the city of Veszprém, and young people from that city have also joined in an extended "twinning" summer camp with youngsters from Uckfield and four other countries.
