The orbit attitude and maneuver system is installed in the equipment and retrograde sections of the adapter module.
The reentry control systems respond to electrical signals from the orbit attitude and maneuver electronics system, the same unit which operates to provide input to the orbit attitude and maneuver engines.
In the event of a malfunction of one system, the remaining RCS has sufficient total impulse capacity and thrust to assure attitude control during retrograde, stabilization for a safe reentry, and thrust as necessary to steer the reentering spacecraft to the desired landing point.

Gemini 3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On March 23, 1965 at 15:57:00 UTC, at the end of the first orbit, over Corpus Christi, Texas, a 1 minute 14 second burn of the Orbit attitude and maneuvering system (OAMS) engines gave a delta-V of 15.5 meters per second.
The orbit was changed from 161.2 km x 224.2 km, period 88.3 minutes to an orbit of 158 km x 169 km, period 87.8 minutes.
On descent, the capsule shifted from a vertical to horizontal attitude under its parachutes.

 SPACE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
The deorbit maneuver decreases this velocity approximately 300 fps (205 mph) for reentry.
Normally, two thrusting maneuvers using the two OMS engines at the aft end of the orbiter are used in a two-step thrusting sequence: to complete insertion into Earth orbit and to circularize the spacecraft's orbit.
In addition, excess orbital maneuvering system and reaction control system propellants are dumped by continuous orbital maneuvering system and reaction control system engine thrustings to improve the orbiter weight and center of gravity for the glide phase and landing.

Lanyard-initiated devices are the parachute reefing cutters, mild detonating fuse initiation system, harness release actuators, ballute deploy-ment and release systems, and drogue mortar-backboard jettison assemblies.
Normally closed pyrotechnic valves isolate the pressurants and propellants in the tanks of the orbit attitude and maneuvering system and the reentry control system from the remainder of the system during prelaunch.
The orbit attitude and maneuvering system is provided with both normally closed and normally open pyrotechnic valves actuated in the event of pressure regulator malfunction.

 MISSION EVENTS SUMMARY
One of on-orbit software's several features, universal pointing is used to compute attitude changes required to point a specified orbiter body axis at a specified target, to maneuver to a predetermined attitude, to rotate the orbiter about a specified body axis or to maintain attitude hold.
The deorbit phase of the mission includes the deorbit burn preparations, including the loading of burn targets and maneuvering to burn attitude; the execution and monitoring of the burn; reconfiguration after the burn; and a coast mode until the atmosphere (and dynamic pressure buildup) is reached at approximately 400,000 feet.
The flight control system issues the commands to the roll, yaw and pitch RCS jets for rate damping in attitude hold for entry into the Earth's atmosphere until 0.176 g is sensed, which corresponds to a dynamic pressure of 10 pounds per square foot, approximately the point at which the aerosurfaces become active.

Purpose of the RCS was to maintain the attitude of the spacecraft during the reentry phase of the mission.
This system commanded the spacecraft's propulsion systems, providing the circuitry which linked the astronaut's operation of his controls to the actual firing of thrusters in the orbit attitude and maneuvering system or the reaction control system.
McDonnell proposed to evaluate the Gemini redezvous radar and spacecraft maneuvering system on early flights by using a rendezvous evaluation pod to be ejected from the spacecraft in orbit.

On The Shoulders of Titans - Ch4-4
It was for the development of the spacecraft environmental control system, which supplied the oxygen, regulated the temperature, and disposed of wastes for the crew.
The Gemini spacecraft was going to have to maneuver in orbit to achieve rendezvous, and this meant that it had to carry a propulsion system (called OAMS for Orbit Attitude and Maneuvering System).
General systems engineering and technical direction of development, with special stress on man-rating - making sure that Titan II was a safe and reliable booster for manned launches - was contracted to the Aerospace Corporation, which filled much the same role in Mercury for the Atlas booster.

Lunar Orbit Rendezvous and the Apollo Program
John C. Houbolt explains the lunar orbit rendezvous concept that, in the opinion of many historians, was chief among the reasons why the U.S., in less than a decade, managed humankind's first extraterrestrial excursions.
Once in Earth orbit, the last stage of the rocket would fire, boosting the Apollo spacecraft with its crew of three men in to its flight trajectory to the moon.
Once in lunar orbit, two of the crew members donned spacesuits and climbed into the lunar excursion module, detached it from the mother ship and "flew" it down to the lunar surface.

Orbit attitude and maneuvering system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The Orbit Attitude and Maneuvering System or OAMS was a propulsion system used in orbit by the Gemini spacecraft.
Eight of the OAMS engines were rated at 111 newtons (25 pounds of thrust) and fired in pairs, allowing the pilot to pitch, roll, and yaw the spacecraft and so control its attitude.
This was the maneuvering part of the system.

Onboard guidance is maneuvering Discovery from its heads-down, tail-forward position needed for the deorbit burn to the reentry configuration of heads-up and nose-forward.
The firing of the twin orbital maneuvering system engines on the tail of the shuttle will last two minutes and 42 seconds, slowing the craft to slip from orbit.
The upcoming two-minute, 42-second retrograde burn using the twin orbital maneuvering system engines on the tail of Discovery will slow the shuttle's velocity by 186 miles per hour, just enough to slip the craft out of orbit and begin the plunge into the atmosphere.
