Orbiter (sim) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Orbiter is a closed source freeware space flight simulator for the Windows operating system created by Dr Martin Schweiger, a computer scientist at University College London.
Orbiter allows any user to explore the solar system on a number of spacecraft, both realistic, such as the Space Shuttle Atlantis, and fictional, such as the Delta-glider.
Orbiter aims to be a realistic simulator rather than an arcade game.

Orbiter allows users to virtually experience many aspects of space flight, including launching to orbit, orbital maneuvering, rendezvous/docking with the International Space Station, deploying satellites from the space shuttle, and even flying to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Orbiter is an excellent resource for space flight enthusiasts, teachers and students of astronomy and physics, and even for aerospace and media professionals who can use it to accurately and dynamically illustrate space missions.
Orbiter 2006 is available for free download at several web sites linked from the main site, where additional information and a gallery of program screen shots are also available.

During the sim, team members take note of things that worked well, as well as those that need to be updated.
It is a very similar to the actual Orbiter and Spacelab; the only difference is that gravity is present during simulations.

On the day of the sim, the simulator facility gears up first, running the motion-base simulator through a series of checkouts to ensure it is working properly and safely for the crew.
The Sim Control position sets the simulators to start at that time, the cockpit is raised to the vertical position for launch, and the GC sets the MCC clocks to start at the same time.
As the orbiter crosses the coastline of Africa, it is apparent that the yellow X's have diverged from the red line and the Guidance and Procedures Officer, "GUIDANCE", reports a "delta state" condition to flight.

SIM will be able to make brightness measurements of a microlensing event at the same time as Earth-based telescopes but from a vantage point some 25 million miles away from Earth, giving astronomers a stereoscopic view of the lens.
Even SIM won't be able to resolve the Einstein ring or twin images when it encounters a microlens.
There should be ample opportunity for SIM to use microlensing to categorize the constituents of the galactic bulge and disk.

Orbiter is a space flight simulator, something of a cross between a conventional PC flight simulator and a planetarium or astronomy program.
Orbiter is accurate enough to recreate actual eclipses, to perform gravitational slingshot maneuvers for interplanetary flights, and even to follow a shuttle launch in real time (as some enthusiastic shuttle fleet add-on users did for STS-114 in July).

Orbiter is fun, but it is also pretty complex, with a substantial and occasionally frustrating learning curve -- new users often need some help to get started, and that's the purpose of this page.
Note that Orbiter is not a "space shooter" - there are no guns or other weapons in Orbiter.
As a freeware product, there is no formal support for Orbiter, but there is documentation and help built in, and there is a Web Forum where other Orbiter users will often answer questions for those who are having trouble.

Orbiter download @ Game Downloads   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
Predating Virgin Interactive's underrated Shuttle by several years, Orbiter is a decent space shuttle simulation that unfortunately is bogged down with too much "realism" to be fun.
As commander of a space shuttle, you select from 4 different types of missions (rendezvous, satellite repair, satellite deployment, or training mission), within each of which you can choose to control any or all of the 3 stages: launch, orbit, and landing.
The problem is, the game quickly degenerates into an exercise in frustration due to complicated user interface that uses multiple windows and viewpoints, poor CGA graphics (EGA, which was widely used in gaming in 1988, was curiously omitted in Orbiter), and lack of campaign mode a la Shuttle.

Orbiter comes with the entire Sol system installed other than Pluto, though the planets aren't as pretty as Earth is. You can get high-res textures of almost all the other planets, however, from the abundant mod community.
Orbiter would be interesting as an underlying engine in a combat sim, plotting a battle in a real gravity well around a planet.
This is a known problem, and Orbiter diehards will counsel you to use time acceleration functions carefully, sparingly, and only on very long-distance flights when you're not in proximity to a planetary gravity source.

What you could also think of is getting a permission from the orbiter author to use the program as a simple simulation tool for movies, animations and such (if possible, 'cause your clearly commercial is emminent, and orbiter is for non-commercial use for the time-being).
Orbiter users have used Orbiter for a variety of educational purposes/demonstrations (it's a good way to learn about orbital mechanics, if you have to actually figure out how to get into orbit).
I'd recommend introducing yourselves on the orbiter sim forums (at http://orbit.m6.net/v2/boardtalk.asp) if you would like to see if there are any other community members that would like to develop what you are looking for.

Orbiter is a closed source, freeware space flight simulator, by Martin Schweiger, a Doctor of Philosophy at the University College London, for the Microsoft-Windows.
Orbiter allows any user to exploration the solar system on a number of spacecraft, such as the Space Shuttle Atlantis, perform a docking with a space station or spacecraft, rendezvous with a satellite, or just try a suborbital flight.
The limits for velocity and distance from the sun are unknown, but experiments show that the program becomes less stable during spacecraft travel at many orders of magnitude of the speed of light.

EO has long been a priority of planetary scientists; a planetary sciences decadal survey report, issued in 2002, ranked a "Europa Geophysical Orbiter" mission as the highest-priority "large" mission (excluding Mars missions) for the 2003-2013 period.
By contrast, EO doesn't face a lot of those technology issues: orbiters are a lot simpler, and have a lot more flight heritage, than formation-flying space telescopes.
