OrcadasBase is the first permanently inhabited base Antarctica.
Since February 22, 1904, Argentina keeps a permanently populated base there, one of the six Argentine permanent bases in the Argentine Antarctica, and the first permanently inhabited base in the Antarctica.
Orcadas was the only base on the islands for 40 years until the British established a small summer base.
Laurie belongs to the South Orkney Islands and is the oldest of all existing bases in Antarctica.
In 1905 the base, which was only a seven meter high and a few hundred meters long strip of land between two ice-clad land formations unfit for living, was offered by the Scots to the British who in turn gave it to the Argentinians.
The base offers the usual view of an orange-colored group of houses on iron stilts, strongly anchored to the ground by wires in order not to blow away.

Its are, looks like small summer bases, but without anybody during last years.
Julio Ripamonti Base" as CE9/R1ANF 29.12.2001-03.02.2002 (3000 qso), and from Deception island, as R1ANF/p on 17.02.2002 (400 qso).
Unfortunately, under the weather conditions for our yacht, there was impossible to wrk from any bases on that island and I was working from the beach directly some photos at www.spartak.ws.

El rompehielos lleva alimentos, medicinas, elementos de construcción y de limpieza, combustible y otros insumos para abastecer durante un año a las seis bases permanentes argentinas en la Antártida, de la cuales dos, San Martín y Belgrano, están ubicadas por debajo del círculo polar.
Más al norte se encuentran las bases Esperanza y Marambio; en las Orcadas del Sur la baseOrcadas y en la isla 25 de Mayo, en las Shetland del Sur, está la base Jubaniy -administrada por la DNA-, que alberga a científicos argentinos y extranjeros.
El rompehielos hará el 22 una escala de aprovisionamiento en Puerto Galván -Bahía blanca-, y se estima que el 31 de diciembre llegará a la BaseOrcadas.
La distancia al epicentro fue de 71.0 Km hacia el ENE de la BaseOrcadas, la cual está ubicada a 60.733º Sur, 44.733º Oeste.
El personal de la Base se encuentra perfectamente, no se registraron heridos.
En Jubany, ubicada a unos 800 km del epicentro, no hubo efectos visibles y en Base Marambio tampoco.

El observatorio meteorológico y magnético de isla Laurie, en islas Orcadas del Sur, Antártida Argentina es la primera y única estación científica que funciona en la Antártida en forma ininterrumpida desde hace 100 años.
En 1950 el Observatorio de Orcadas pasó a jurisdicción de la Fuerza Aérea y en 1952 a la del Ministerio de Marina, siendo operado como Destacamento Naval Orcadas (decreto Nº 13.714 del 23 de diciembre de 1952), denominación que actualmente mantiene.
Actualmente la BaseOrcadas, luce modernas y confortables construcciones, y continúa aportando datos, conocimientos y experiencia al saber de la humanidad.

SISMO DE MAGNITUD 7,3 a 70 KM DE LA BASEORCADAS
El lunes 4 de agosto de 2003 a la 1:37 hs de la madrugada, hora Argentina (4:37:19 UTC), se produjo un sismo de magnitud 7,3 a unos 70 km hacia el ENE de la BaseOrcadas (Isla Laurie) en la Antártida Argentina.
El hipocentro se halla ubicado a 10 km de profundidad bajo el fondo del Mar de Scotia, a 60.55
4.- Ocupación permanente de una estación científica que se mantiene desde comienzos de siglo hasta nuestros días: el Observatorio Meteorológico y Magnético de las Islas Orcadas del Sur, inaugurado en 1904.
5.- Instalación y mantenimiento de otras bases temporarias en la península antártica e islas adyacentes; también en la barrera de hielo de Filchner, aparte de numerosos refugios en distintos puntos del sector.
Permanentes: Orcadas, Jubany, Esperanza, Marambio, San Martín y Belgrano II.

**** Sismo en las Islas Orcadas (04 de agosto 2003) ****
El 04 de agosto de 2003 a las 01:37 hs (Hora Legal Argentina) se produjo un sismo cuyo epicentro se localiza próximo a la Isla Laurie (Orcadas del Sur).
El sismo fue percibido por la dotación de la BaseOrcadas donde se produjo la rotura de algunos vidrios.
