		County, in west central Georgia, was created in 1851 by the state legislature from parts of Fayette, Henry, and Pike counties.

		The idealism of Georgia's founders (who at first wished to prohibit lawyers, slaves, Catholics, and liquor from entering the colony) as well as the bounty of the land led natives to view Georgia peach country as a kind of Eden.
		Peach orchards (as well as pecan, apple, and pear orchards) are primarily found in the central belt shown on this map.
		The peach was added to Georgia's agricultural repertoir to increase the diversity of crops after the boll weevil destroyed much of the cotton crop in the 1890s and the Civil War destroyed much of the Georgian railway.

		Orchard Knob was the forward position of the Confederate siege line, until Grant attacked on Nov. 23, when he suspected the Rebel forces might be lifting their siege.
		This national cemetery, located on 124 acres of gently rolling hills, contains the reinterred Union dead from Chickamauga, Chattanooga and other actions in the area.

		Thomas would take Orchard Knob then "demonstrate" at the center to prevent Bragg from reinforcing his flanks while Hooker came in from the left and Sherman from the right.
		The Army of the Cumberland, the men who valiantly fought for Thomas at Chickamauga, took Orchard Knob on the 23rd of November, 1863, while the Union troops, fresh from battles in Mississippi and Virginia, watched.
		Lightly defended, the Knob was easily overrun as rebels holding positions on the hill fled on the advance of federal units.
