While it seems mannered and much more professional in hindsight than some of the crass big screen tie-ins of today, Orchestra Wives is very roughly the equivalent of something like The Spice Girls Movie or an early Usher flick — a movie conceived entirely around the burgeoning appeal of the Glen Miller Band.
To this end, the mixture of drama and tunes is somewhat awkwardly stitched together by screenwriters Karl Tunberg and Darrell Ware, working from an original story (heh) by James Prindle.
The cool thing, though, is that actors Rutherford and Fayard Nicholas pop up for an audio commentary track, and their participation and remembrances give Orchestra Wives some much-welcome zest, particularly when they relate their memories of Miller.
