 2. Orchestra Pits | Safety Guidelines for the Live Performance Industry in Ontario | Ontario Ministry of Labour
The orchestra pit, by its very nature, is the equivalent of a large, open stage trap and is a constant risk to the safety of stage performers, musicians and stage personnel.
The pit safety cover should extend across the entire width of the pit and a sufficient distance over the orchestra pit from the lip of the stage to prevent accidental falls by personnel into the pit and to catch material which, when accidentally dropped from the stage, could cause injury.
An orchestra pit is a workplace that, in accordance with section 129, shall be maintained at a “temperature suitable for the type of work performed”, and shall be at a temperature “not less than 18° Celsius”.

To balance the orchestra sound, individual musicians have been forced to play overly soft or loud, which means the players couldn't hear themselves or each other, and singers on the stage had problems hearing the music.
HGO and Houston Ballet got two million dollars from the City of Houston to pay for moving the orchestra pit completely out from under the stage, farther out into the audience area, and this work is now underway in the Wortham's large hall.
With the larger orchestra pit sticking five feet farther out into the hall, the Wortham is losing two sections of seats on the front row, 22 seats in all.

ScienceDaily: Orchestra Pit No Danger To Hearing
"The orchestra musicians are part of a union and they were concerned about the noise level in the pit when it came to renewing their contract," says the study's lead author, research associate Alberto Behar of U of T's Institute for Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering (IBBME).
They then tested 67 volunteers who were requested to wear a noise dosimeter a small cigarette-sized instrument used to measure sound during 18 sessions of an activity that was either a rehearsal, a dress rehearsal or an actual performance, all of them in the pit.
While the orchestra players may not be in danger of hearing loss in the pit, Behar cautions that the study did not take into account individual practice and measures should always be taken to protect hearing.
