 Scelsi: Orchestral Works (survey)
Unusually for Scelsi's orchestral music, this composition was performed shortly after it was written: in Paris under Maurice Leroux on December 4th, 1961.
Aion is undoubtedly one of the greatest orchestral masterpieces of this century, and marks Scelsi's total command of his new style.
The first movement, the longest of the five, is a grand overture; it begins in quiet contemplation, only to be interrupted by the violent mystical revelation of the chorus propelling this story into the present from the distant past, and then sinking back into meditative tones with a presentiment of the upcoming adventure.

 ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES
Orchestral terminology is generally in Italian, and while most of it is only of relevance to classical composers and musicologists, some of it may be useful when working out what instrument it is you actually have a sample of:
Orchestral music can use a lot of fast snare rolls, which can be difficult to emulate and even more difficult to sequence.
Creating a convincing orchestral sound using just samples owes more to the way those sounds are put together and treated in the composition than it does to the samples themselves.

 21st Century Orchestral Instruments
The problem is acute in the case of orchestral instruments because of relatively high development costs, and because the tone quality, responsiveness and mechanism of new instruments will inevitably be compared to existing instruments.
Approaching this project in terms of a complete and comprehensive new system of orchestral instruments may seem overly ambitious, and it might appear to be more realistic to concentrate, for example, on building a single new instrument.
The example is merely an illustration of why it seems to me that the typical standard of musicianship of a professional orchestral player is a legitimate standard of excellence beyond which, especially for orchestral music, composers should begin to call for new and special acoustic instruments in addition to new and special performance techniques.

ISAM Newsletter: Persona non grata: Frank Zappa's Orchestral Subculture
Third, it is rare for a composer to choose orchestral music as a forum to contradict “the myth of consensus and inevitability,” when the test of idiomatic orchestration is usually the very place a composer drops modernist alienation and takes up traditional, centuries-old ideas of orchestral color.
Zappa prepared the orchestral version of this work for Boulez in 1984, incorporating all the new and written-out material one would need when revamping an improvisation-heavy chart for a “classical” orchestra that would have little rehearsal time on its hands.
Most prominent and also conventional here is Zappa’s tendency to write for pairs of instruments in thirds, to set off large sections of music in contrasting instrumentation (the long, chromatic passage for two pianos, for example), and generally to use instruments according to their traditionally-defined roles (mallet instruments for color, low brass for harmonic support).

 SAMPLE THE ORCHESTRA
The best way to understand orchestral sound is to go and see live orchestral performances on a regular basis, but if you live in Ipswich or are a member of a vicious motorcycle gang, this may not be practical.
It goes without saying that every orchestral instrument is capable of solo performance, but the noble and moving effect we associate with 'orchestral' sound is traditionally produced by ensembles of instruments playing together.
Traditionally, orchestral brass contains no saxophones, resulting in a purer sound than that of a pop brass section (saxes, being reed instruments, have a slight 'buzz' in their sound which you won't hear from a trumpet or trombone).
