CIVIL WAR, in U.S. history. The Columbia Encyclopedia: Sixth Edition. 2000   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
In Feb., 1862, the Union gunboats of Andrew H. Foote forced the Confederates to retire from their post Fort Henry on the Tennessee to their stronghold on the Cumberland, Fort Donelson.
Minor Union successes at Iuka (Sept. 19) and Corinth (Oct. 3–4) followed, while the counterinvasion by the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Braxton Bragg was stopped by Don Carlos Buell at Perryville, Ky. (Oct. 8, 1862).
For Lincoln and kindred moderates, such as Postmaster General Montgomery Blair, the restoration of the Union, not the abolition of slavery, remained the principal objective of the war.

The new union was, in essence, a breakaway from the NUDL and its membership profile reflected the waterside occupations of that union.
On the political front the union continued to be actively involved in support for the Labour Party and regularly claimed the majority of returned Labour deputies as ITGWU members, with the implicit financial and organisational support of the union behind them.
The union was active in utilising the newly established procedures of the Labour Court, inaugurated in 1946, with Cathal O'Shannon, a union nominee, as a workers' member, especially for low paid workers.

USA-Presidents.Info - John Tyler Fourth State of the Union Address
In the bright prospects of that future we shall find, as patriots and philanthropists, the highest inducements to cultivate and cherish a love of union and to frown down every measure or effort which may be made to alienate the States or the people of the States in sentiment and feeling from each other.
Preserving these and avoiding all interpolations by forced construction under the guise of an imagined expediency upon the Constitution, the influence of our political system is destined to be as actively and as beneficially felt on the distant shores of the Pacific as it is now on those of the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the chief objections which was urged against it was found to consist in the fact that the question of annexation had not been submitted to the ordeal of public opinion in the United States.

Foote campaigned for passage of the Compromise of 1850 and urged Mississippi to remain in the Union.
Issues such as state’s rights and high tariffs are frequently cited as causes of the war, but Mississippi's defense of the institution of slavery was the ultimate reason the state seceded from the Union.
When a new free state entered the Union, another slave state was also accepted to maintain the balance.

During the early years of The War, the Yankee propagandists attempted to drum up support by labeling it "The War to Save the Union" (inadvertently acknowledging that the North, without the South, would be lost).
The official Union designation was "The War of the Rebellion." Other names have been "The War of Secession" and "The War for Southern Independence." In the South, the conflict is called "The War Between The States."
The Congress of the United States used the term "War Between The States" in two measures enacted into law; one measure became Public Law 834 in 1950, and a Resolution, H. 580, was adopted by the House in 1944.

 THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
The fall of Atlanta, on September 2, 1864, was a significant factor in the re-election of Abraham Lincoln, as President of the Union.
The Union population was 22 million and the South 9 million in 1861; the disparity grew as the Union controlled more and more southern territory with garrisons, and cut off the trans-Mississippi part of the Confederacy.
Charles Francis Adams proved particularly adept as ambassador to Britain for the Union, and Britain was reluctant to boldly challenge the Union's blockade.

In fact, the Union and Confederate armies mobilized as volunteers a larger percentage of their societies’ manpower than any other war in American history—probably in world history, with the possible exception of the French Revolution.
Even in 1861 four states that remained loyal to the Union were slave states, and the Democratic minority in free states opposed any move to make the war for the Union a war against slavery.
As enemy property they could be confiscated by Union forces as “contraband of war.” This was the thin edge of the wedge that finally broke apart the American paradox.

The Lincoln/Johnson ticket ran with the slogan “Don't change horses in the middle of a stream,” and over time a series of Union victories culminating in the capture of Atlanta, Georgia by forces led by General William Tecumseh Sherman restored Lincoln's popularity.
It was widely assumed—and indeed evident in the soldiers' corps—that those serving in the Army were going to turn out heavily for Lincoln; the expectation was validated as Lincoln received more than 70% of the soldiers' vote.
