Ideal (ring theory) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An ideal can be used to construct a factor ring in a similar way as a normal subgroup in group theory can be used to construct a factor group.
The concept of an order ideal in order theory is derived from the notion of ideal in ring theory.
The sum and the intersection of ideals is again an ideal; with these two operations as join and meet, the set of all ideals of a given ring forms a lattice.

Ideal (order theory) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ideals are of great importance for many constructions in order and lattice theory.
In Stone's representation theorem for Boolean algebras, the maximal ideals (or, equivalently via the negation map, ultrafilters) are used to obtain the set of points of a topological space, whose clopen sets are isomorphic to the original Boolean algebra.
Ideals were introduced first by Marshall H. Stone, who derived their name from the ring ideals of abstract algebra.

Ideal Order Theory   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
In the mathematical theory of partial orders, an ideal is a special subset of a partially ordered set.
While this is the most general way to define an ideal for arbitrary posets, it was originally defined for latticess only.
An important special case of an ideal is given by those ideals whose set-theoretic complements are filters, i.e.

The 7 Orders of Cyberspace: Working Model
The ideal order is perhaps the most fundamental and least understood of the seven orders.
The ideal order allows for objects or laws whose existence is non-local and transcends the necessity of specific physical instances (the laws of mathematics or the platonic solids, for example).
These physical order objects are ultimately subject to the same limitations as the physical order cultural objects, but in their interaction with the electronic order they enable a space of cultural expression and interaction which transcends those limits.

order ideal (prime order ideal, maximal order ideal) of the Boolean algebra.
The quotient ring of a Boolean ring modulo a ring ideal corresponds to the factor algebra of the corresponding Boolean algebra modulo the corresponding order ideal.
Since maximal ideals are always prime, we conclude that prime ideals and maximal ideals coincide in Boolean rings.

 Ziniewicz on Plato (Brief Reflections)
Seeing (with one's mind) how things ought to be put together (their ideal proportion) helps one order and arrange one's own life, as well as the life of the city as a whole.
Every inquiry into the meaning of form and order sharpens the mind's vision of order itself; thus even studying mathematics or geometry or astronomy can make a person wiser about order in his own life and in the city.
To a lesser extent, Plato's ideal conflicts with the ideal of democracy, which holds that individuals may indeed shape themselves, but that they must find their own places and not be shaped or ordered by authoritarian rulers, no matter how enlightened.

It is of practical interest in quantifying how ordinary likelihood-based inferences, frequency-valid only to first order, are affected by second-order corrections depending on the probability model or the chosen reference set.
It has been noted that there are two aspects of higher-order corrections to first-order likelihood methods: (i) that involving effects of fitting nuisance parameters and leading to the modified profile likelihood, and (ii) another part pertaining to limitation in adjusted information.
Although this is a deep issue, we indicate— somewhat surprisingly — that to second order ideal frequency inferences may be based on the distribution of the ordinary signed likelihood ratio statistic, without commonly considered adjustments to this.

Part of the reason for presenting information in the latter order is that this is the way pages must be structured in order to display the page properly in a table.
Therefore, the table layout prevents some people from seeing the data on the page at all, and also presents that information in an illogical order for those who use a page reader or screen reader that is able to read it, a double whammy.
By changing to this presentation order, I can make the site work better for anyone using a screen reader, and I get the added benefit that the pages should fare better in search engines, since the important information in the page is now closer to the top of each page.

Cosmic order was seen in both music* and dance*.
