 The Mars Society FAQ
Mars Direct achieves its low cost in two ways: by using only existing technologies, adapted for the specifics of a Mars mission, and by generating rocket fuel for the return mission -- by far the largest mass component, and therefore most costly non-development expense of any Mars mission -- on the surface of Mars.
Mars' gravity is roughly 1/3 of Earth's; the Moon's is roughly 1/6 of Earth's.
In order to assist with this effort, sample materials are available for those who may be uncertain how to proceed when attempting to meet with their Congresspersons.

Tabberone's Temporary Restraining Order against Mars part 2.
Attempts to settle included negotiations for Mars, Incorporated to purchase all of the M&Ms® fabric in the possession of the Plaintiffs (see attachment #6) as well as subsequent negotiations for a licensing agreement where the Plaintiffs would become Mars licensees for 3 years concerning the use of the licensed M&Ms® fabrics (see attachment #7).
Mars, Incorporated was compensated for the use of the fabric.
The compensation to Mars, Incorporated, the lack of use disclaimers, and the sheer quantity and scope of distribution supports the Plaintiffs claim that the fabric was purchased with an implied use license that allowed the Plaintiffs to use the fabric in hand-crafted fabric items and resell them.

Biology and the Planetary Engineering of Mars
Therefore returning Mars to a past climatic state may not be possible, and clearly given the climatic history of Mars such a climate maybe geologically unstable and undesirable for the extreme long term habitability of the planet.
The equatorial regions of Mars appear to be ice poor whereas the heavily cratered terrain pole-ward of ± 30° latitude appears to be ice rich (Squyres and Carr, 1986), with perhaps a conservative estimate of the equivalent of 17 m of ice spread over the surface of Mars (Jankowski and Squyres, 1993).
Mars will probably never be a wet planet as it might have been in the past (Carr, 1986; 1987), although the view that Mars was "warm and wet" is uncertain and perhaps "cold and icy" may be more appropriate (Kasting, 1991; Squyres and Kasting, 1994).

GEC of Mars: Sources of Atmospheric Conductivity
In order for a global electric circuit similar to Earth's to exist in the Martian atmosphere, a constant current source, or current generator must be located in a finitely conducting atmosphere.
Since pressure and temperature are approximately equal, the atmospheric number density at the surface of Mars is approximately equal to that of Earth's atmosphere at 30 to 35 km, though the composition is different.
If we conclude that this should be about the order of magnitude expected at the surface of Mars, then the ionization rate due to cosmic rays is approximately equal to that due to radioactive crustal material at the ground level.

Flight to Mars: the Return Trip
For flying back from Mars to Earth the Hohmann ellipse can also be used, but again, the planets need to be positioned just right at the time of launch.
Let's see where Earth should be at the time of launch from Mars, in order for the return flight to meet it at the proper time.
Since Earth and Mars constantly change their relative position, it stands to reason that if we sufficiently delay the return trip, Earth will move from position (2) relative to Mars to position (3), at which time the return trip can begin.

Off Svetz goes, not to the Mars of the Viking and Pathfinder landers, but to the Mars of the writers of the first part of the twentieth century.
This is the Mars where octopoids of lofty and unsympathetic intelligence build saucer-shaped craft and cast envious eyes upon Earth's bounty.
But it is also a Mars with a difference, a Mars where a slender tree forms a connection between synchronous orbit and the surface.

Mars Matrix for Dreamcast Review - Dreamcast Mars Matrix Review
As the pilot of a mosquito-class ship, it's your job to restore order to Mars by blowing up the insurgents' ships and dodging their bullets.
But the ships' special weapon, the mosquito attack, is where Mars Matrix displays its subtle ingenuity--highly reminiscent of Gigawing's "reflect force," this special attack absorbs all enemy shell fire currently onscreen and whips it right back them, if maintained long enough.
Needless to say, only the most skilled individuals will be able to finish Mars Matrix with the game's default number of lives and continues, ensuring that those who want to see it all the way through have to pick at it for a while.

 Mars Exploration Rover Mission:
The term "weather on Mars" can mean a lot of different things, but the atmospheric team is harvesting hypotheses from four main elements: air temperature, water-ice clouds, water vapor, and dust.
The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is important to scientists because it is a key part of the current climate and potentially gives clues about the distribution of water under the surface.
While orbiters have provided us with many great images of cloud-cover on Mars, they are limited by the time of day of their orbit and can only reveal what the clouds look like in a particular spot at a particular time.

 The Mariner Missions
Secondly, Mariner 4 was to provide close range images of Mars in order to provide us with the most detailed surface pictures ever obtained of the planet, hopefully revealing geologic and atmospheric processes.
It was not conclusively determined whether or not Mars had an intrinsic magnetic field, but to date it is generally accepted that Mars is essentially without an intrinsic magnetic field of any significance.
The restoration of the Mariner 7 imaging system was a prime example of the expertise being developed by mission operators during these early interplanetary missions and the event stood as a testament to the importance of having a reprogammable computer on the spacecraft.

ESA officials said Mars Express should still be able to go into orbit around Mars should Beagle 2 fail to disengage, but the craft would not be able to reach its optimum orbital position or conduct the amount of science planned.
Pillinger also said that the Mars Express/Beagle 2 team is at work preparing a dedicated media center for the Mars mission in order to readily announce findings as they come in.
Launched on June 2, 2003, the Mars Express mission is an ESA effort to study Mars and search not only for elusive water beneath the surface, but also for any traces of life - past or present - on the planet.

 Magnificent Mars by Ken Croswell
Mars may answer the great question, "Are we alone?"; for if Mars, like Earth, gave rise to life, then trillions of other worlds throughout the universe have surely done the same.
Indeed, because there are relatively few Mars scientists, many of us have been so busy trying to help operate these projects and to acquire and process their observations that the implications of these discoveries about the history of the red planet have not really sunk in.
Magnificent Mars by astronomer Ken Croswell is an erudite survey of the red planet from pole to pole, organized around the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water.

Mars and its future is viewed through different cultures and ideologies.
If Red Mars has faults, they are that it is fairly humourless, and some of the science (nothing, fortunately, important to the principle of convincing the reader that colonization is possible) is somewhat stretched.
Posing more problems than answers, Red Mars leaves the reader uneasy about humanity's progress, with a mix of optimism about what we can do, and pessimism for what we are likely to do; it portrays characters the reader can feel for, and a planet to fall in love with.

 An Introduction to Martian Time
The problem is that Mars has its own distinct natural cycles, and the impact of these cycles on human activities on Mars will be impossible to ignore.
In order to express the local time at each site, the sol was divided into 24 Martian hours, which were in turn divided into 60 minutes per hour and 60 seconds per minute, just as on Earth.
Others, taking note of Mars' lopsided orbit, think that the months should span equal arcs of that orbit, even though this means that each month would contain a different number of sols (presenting a challenge Martian poets to come up with a mnemonic poem that would be truly memorable, if not very short).

Red Mars told the story of the initial colonization of Mars, first by the "First Hundred", a joint Russian-American expedition, then by Earth-dominated, mostly corporate-controlled colonists who followed to build on the efforts of the "First Hundred".
Thus Blue Mars has sections set on Earth, on Mercury, and in the moons of Uranus, as well as visits to Venus, the asteroids, and the others of the Outer Planets.
I still rank Red Mars as the best novel of the series: it had a more coherent structure, was set over a shorter time-period, and featured my favorite writing of the series: the ecstatic novella "Falling into History", its central section.

O'Keefe, who is due to leave the space agency later this year, noted that the Mars missions provided the best evidence yet that planet once had a climate that could have sustained life, with saltwater seas that disappeared long ago under circumstances not yet fully understood.
Cornell University astronomer Steve Squyres, the missions' principal scientific investigator, said it would be up to future Mars probes to figure out whether life actually arose on Mars, and whether some form of life might still exist, perhaps deep underground.
Firouz Naderi, head of the Mars Exploration Program at JPL, indicated that the missions would likely be extended as long as the machines were still in working order, at a monthly cost of $3 million.

The Mars Volta's 'Frances the Mute' reviewed on official website of Laura Hird
Anyone that has heard either of The Mars Volta’s albums to date will know that, whilst the band’s fascinatingly named, afro’d masterminds Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (guitar) and Cedric Bixler Zavala (vocals) are capable of producing fantastic music, they are also quite possibly the most avant-garde, experimental musicians out there at the moment.
The group’s sound, which could be broadly classified as metal-punk-jazz-opera madness, leaves the listener with the impression that this may just be the future of music — or, it could be a fantastic side-road doomed by its own weirdness to be experienced by only the lucky few.
Moments such as these really drive home just how fantastic The Mars Volta are when they actually break into proper tunes, so it’s a shame they spend so much time messing around with distortion.
